Fridays at Findlay: Animal Behavior Management

December 6, 2019 @ 7:30 am - 9:00 am

Animal Behavior Management: Operant Conditioning with Dolphins, Tigers, Elephants and More
Sue Young ’07, Animal Behavior & Enrichment Manager, Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park, Tampa, FL.

Sue Young ‘07 serves as the Animal Behavior and Enrichment Manager at ZooTampa at Lowry Park in Tampa, FL. Young has been involved in the animal training community for 12 years, and has been a part of some unforgettable experiences. After working with marine mammals at the Miami Seaquarium, Young took her work to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where she worked with rehabilitated marine life, including Winter from the hit movie, Dolphin Tale. Many might remember Winter as the dolphin with the prosthetic tail. Along with that, Young and the animals she trains at ZooTampa will be featured in National Geographic’s Secrets of the Zoo, set to air this winter. Young now applies her training knowledge to an even wider array of animal species, ranging from birds and meerkats, all the way to tigers and elephants. Young’s goal is to teach her staff about operant conditioning, improve animal welfare through training and enrichment, along with helping to contribute to conservation. Young is a 2007 University of Findlay graduate, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology.
