Passenger Pigeon: Open House
September 1 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
FreeEvent Navigation
The Passenger Pigeon was once the most numerous bird species in the world with population estimates as high as seven billion birds living in Eastern North America. However, due to over hunting by early Americans, the bird became extinct 110 years ago when the last Passenger Pigeon died at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914. Hancock Park District will discuss how Ohio settlers and Native Americans viewed the birds, the process of hunting the birds, and the impact they had on the land. Join us at the McKinnis House to learn how the Passenger Pigeon affected the lives of settlers in 1847 and how to make pigeon pie.
Meet at the McKinnis House. All ages are welcome to this free event, registration is not required.
