You may have noticed a new restaurant along I-75, with its bright green sign, unique logo, and interesting name. GER Mongolian Grill is a locally owned Mongolian Barbecue restaurant that opened in Summer 2017, and allows you to pick your own vegetables, protein, sauce and spices, before having it cooked in front of you. Don’t stress if this is a new dining experience for you, we have it covered step-by-step!
Step 1: Arrive
…and take your seat. While you’re waiting for your waiter to take your drink order, take a look around. With the lime green and metallic accents, GER has a modern and sleek look, with a minimalist flair – they let the food do the talking! My favorite part is the ceiling, with a cool wave design. If you want something a little stronger than pop or water to drink make sure to plan ahead! GER doesn’t have alcohol on the menu, however you can bring your favorite adult drink in with you.
Step 2: Choose your Size
There are two size bowls you can choose from, I chose the small bowl and my husband chose the large bowl. He had some leftovers and I didn’t (but I was FULL) so pick according to your appetite!
Step 3: Choose your Veggies
…and some fruit options too. I’m pretty traditional (some would say boring) with my vegetable options so I opted for broccoli, onions, and mushrooms. But no matter what you’re in the mood for GER has you covered. Kale, Jalapenos, Edamame, Mandarin Oranges, Red Potatoes, Bamboo Shoots, and Baby Corn are just a small sampling of what you can choose from.
Step 4: Choose your Protein
We were really impressed with the protein options at GER. There were a lot of seafood options, as well as chicken, beef, sausage, and more. Make sure you load your bowl up! You pay by the bowl so you want to load it up!
Step 5: Choose your Sauce and Spices
This is where it pays to think ahead. I found myself standing in front of all the sauce and spice options for a long time deciding on what would compliment each other (and the food I had already loaded into my bowl) and what I wanted to choose. I ended up choosing the GER Sauce, which was delicious, but you can anything from Buffalo Sauce to Soy Sauce to compliment your meal.
Step 6: Watch it Cook
After you have filled your bowl and picked your sauces, wait until it is your turn to step up to the counter and watch your food be cooked on the round grill. The cook will ask if you want rice, an egg, or noodles to compliment your meal. From then you just get to watch your food be prepared! Once everything is cooked the way you want it they slide it onto a bowl and you get to make your way back to your table.
Step 7: Enjoy!
Now the easiest step, enjoy your meal!
We really enjoyed our dinner out at GER and it was a great date night out. What is really nice is that there are options for everyone. Vegetarians will leave happy and get their money’s worth, as much as someone who is a self-proclaimed carnivore. If you have picky eaters you’re covered because they can pick and choose what they want to eat, which makes it a great option for families. Plus, GER has a special kids bowl price, making it an affordable option. If you’re looking to enjoy GER at home (or at work, for lunch!), you can definitely do that! Just ask for a to-go box and follow the same steps as above, just enjoy at home!
Also, still wondering what in the world GER means? The word “ger” means yurt in Mongolia, which is a traditional home for Mongols. The unique logo I mentioned above? It reflects the framework of poles, the center smoke hole ring, and circular latticework wall that makes the yurt. When choosing a name the owners wanted to convey in their restaurant what the yurt means to Mongols – a place to gather, central to family, and home.
