Solar Eclipse Viewer Workshop

March 29 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

The total solar eclipse is on its way but are you ready to safely view this once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event for our area? At this Hancock Park District workshop, you can create your own pinhole eclipse projector, which is the safest way to view an eclipse.

We will talk about the eclipse that will occur on April 8 from what is an eclipse to the timing of the total eclipse. Then we will work together to create our own viewers and learn how the pinhole projector works. To create a viewer, you will need to bring your own projector body. The body must be able to create a dark room that can be cut out to create viewing windows. Examples of suitable pinhole projector bodies include a cardboard box, cereal box, pringles tube, poster tube, paper towel tube, or toilet paper roll tube. All other supplies will be provided. If the sky is clear, we will go outside to try our viewers and view the sun using a telescope and solar filter. All participants will receive solar eclipse glasses and a pinhole viewer card.

Meet at the Discovery Center.  This free event is open to families with children 5 and up.  Registration is not required.
