The Best of Ohio is in Findlay!

You know it.  We know it.  Now Ohio knows it.

The readers’ picks for Ohio Magazine’s Best of Ohio have been named and several Findlay and Hancock County locations are on the list!

Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream are two-time champs with wins in both the Best Ice Cream and Best Ohio-Made Candy categories, both titles they have claimed individually in the past, but the first time together!  Anyone who has visited will agree with the readers’ pick and if you plan to enjoy some treats from Dietsch’s to celebrate we recommend the Chocolate Pretzel Caramel Swirl – with candy and ice cream it is for winners!

Best Ice Cream ☑ Best Candy ☑   Dietsch Brothers is for winners!

Findlay Brewing Company joined the ranks of winners being named the Best Craft Brewery in the state.  With a great atmosphere, delicious food, and even better brews, Findlay Brewing Company deserves the title.  Continue your celebration tour of Findlay by toasting to their win with a pint of Hancocked or Ohio Weather this weekend!

Findlay Brewing Company

There is a spot right here to celebrate Findlay Brewing as the best Craft Brewery in the state!

The Hancock Hotel repeated last year’s win as the readers’ choice for Best Destination Hotel!  With a great downtown location, luxurious rooms, friendly staff, and a square of Dietsch’s chocolate on the pillow this selection is a non-brainer!

Is it a coincidence that you receive award-winning chocolate when you stay in an award-winning Hancock Hotel?

Also repeating a win from 2018 is Findlay’s ArtWalk for Best Art Walk.  It is all in the name and it is an obvious choice!  This bi-annual Downtown ArtWalk takes place the first Fridays in May and November when artists infiltrate Downtown businesses and galleries and studios open their doors to visitors to experience art in every form.

With artists, collaborative businesses, and a thriving Downtown, Findlay’s ArtWalk has to be the best Art Walk in the state!

Reclaiming their titles as Best Antiques is Jeffrey’s Antique Gallery!  This Findlay landmark is located right along I-75 and is chock full of treasures waiting to be explored.  With booths filled to the brim of antiques from all eras and all interests, the readers of Ohio Magazine definitely got this selection right!

With booths upon booths waiting for you to explore, Jeffrey’s Antique Gallery is the best place to shop for antiques…literally.

Thank you for your support in voting for the best of Ohio and supporting your neighbors!  You can see all the Best of Ohio selections here and in the January issue of Ohio Magazine!

4 Things You Learn About ArtWalk As A Featured Artist

I’ve always dabbled in illustration and painting, and have casually taken freelance assignments through the years. As an “artsy” type, ArtWalk has always appealed to me. This year, I was feeling especially inspired and signed up to be a featured artist for the spring’s ArtWalk. If you’ve never attended ArtWalk events in the past, you don’t know what you’re missing. I’ve been a guest at ArtWalk for years, and for as much as I liked it as a casual attendee, I absolutely love it now as a featured artist. Being featured gave me an entirely new perspective on the role this event plays in our community. For example…

4. ArtWalk perfectly blends local commerce and local art

Anyone can put a bunch of art on easels and call it an “experience.” I was in San Francisco earlier this year where they were promoting a “bubble gum art experience,” which was exactly what it sounds like. It was an entire art gallery dedicated to the unintended artistic expression of disposed bubble gum. Translation: a bunch of chewed gum was on display. That’s what passes for an experience these days.

This is an example of bubblegum art. Is it exactly what you imagined? Photo by Kārlis Dambrāns

In Findlay, Ohio, we extrapolate the artistic experience. Just like a hipster making coffee, we put extra effort into crafting something that’s greater than the sum of its parts. ArtWalk exists as a showcase of local art and the artists that create it. Taking it one step further, ArtWalk is also a showcase of local businesses that appreciate and support local art. That means, in addition to gallery open houses, local businesses play host to local artists and their work.

I was stationed in Flag City Clothing. ArtWalk guests making the stop to see me also got to experience one of Findlay’s most unique shops. As a creative, custom-printed clothing store, Flag City Clothing is a business that exudes artistic expression. Guests could stand there and watch me complete an illustration, or they could literally turn around to watch t-shirts getting printed.

Brandon was stationed at Flag City Clothing at the last ArtWalk and he will be back there again on November 1!

All across town, guests get this same experience. You can use ArtWalk as an excuse to experience local art, but you also get a new appreciation for retail locations and restaurants that keep our town’s lifeblood pumping.

3. ArtWalk can provide the ultimate home conversation piece

There was a time when people displayed artwork at home as a conversation starter. It’s easy to see why that worked – 60 years ago, art was unique and one-of-a-kind. We now live in the age of IKEA and Shutterfly. If you have artwork hanging up, it’s probably mass produced and also in hundreds of other homes in your community. And if it’s not artwork, it’s probably a big canvas print of your family wearing matching red sweaters posed underneath a tree. There’s not much conversation there except for “Oh, you’re wearing red. Cute.”

At ArtWalk, you can shop local art while also getting to know the artists that created it. If you see a piece of art that matches your décor, you can also hear the story behind it. You can learn what the artist was thinking, the process used to create it, and also a bit about how hard it will be for the artist to part with it. These are all fascinating stories to share with friends when they visit your home.

KanDu Studios will be open for ArtWalk and there are many great pieces you can purchase. Hanging one in your office will not not make you popular.

I bought a painting from Kan Du Studios. It’s a really eye-catching, interesting painting with expressive strokes and vibrant colors. I hung it in my office and I get at least one comment about it every day. And for each comment, I have the opportunity to tell Kan Du’s story and share some inspiration from the artist, who also happens to have a developmental disability. And for each time I share that story, I make a new friend.

Am I saying that buying local art makes you popular? Well no. But it certainly won’t hurt your chances.

2. You can learn techniques to inspire your own artistic endeavors

The stapedius is the smallest muscle in the body. It’s just over one millimeter in length (equal to the width of a credit card), and its purpose is to stabilize the smallest bone in your body, the stapes, deep inside your inner ear. If any part of you is artistic – if even just your stapedius is your most creative muscle – it will get flexed during ArtWalk. Everytime I visit ArtWalk, I come away with a flurry of new ideas and a drive to execute on those ideas

Inspiration is abound at ArtWalk!

ArtWalk is all about sharing ideas. If you enjoy painting, use this time to talk to painters. If you like tiny art, you can talk to artists who make tiny art. Or you can talk to tiny artists. From collages, to sculptures, to woodworking…all of it has representation at ArtWalk. And if the visual arts aren’t your thing, musical arts are well represented too. Bands and individual performers are sprinkled throughout the ArtWalk locations. You’ll be back home rocking Freebird on your clarinet before you can say yee-haw.

ArtWalk isn’t just for visual artists – performing artists can be found throughout Downtown!

Inspiration abounds at ArtWalk, so proceed with caution. Don’t come unless you’re fully prepared to have every creative impulse validated. The creative bug bit me hard. So much so that after first participating in the spring, l’ll again be featured at ArtWalk on November 1.

1. You can make connections that go well beyond this one evening

Artists are participating in ArtWalk for a combination of three reasons: 1) they want to showcase their art; 2) they want to demonstrate their art; or 3) they want to connect with people who appreciate art. ArtWalk artists exist because they want to share and broadcast what they love. If you like what they have, you can buy it. If you like their style, you can work with them on new projects.

ArtWalk is a chance to meet and learn more about the artists and inspiration behind their pieces.

As I mentioned, I was stationed at Flag City Clothing, which opened up a relationship I didn’t anticipate (but should have). They have a persistent need for artwork on their shirts and I have a persistent need to create artwork. Together, we’ve been able to collaborate on a bunch of great projects. Most recently, I did the illustration for their Halloween shirt. It even glows in the dark!

Connections can be made at ArtWalk – like Brandon’s collaboration with Flag City Clothing for their glow-in-the-dark Halloween t-shirt

This shirt was possible thanks to the relationship I formed with Flag City Clothing during ArtWalk. Aside from that, the entire evening was filled with new connections. Thanks to conversations with attendees, for the past several months I’ve drawn pictures for t-shirts, album covers, magazine ads, auction items, and social media promotions. ArtWalk was made for these types of connections.

Art is alive and thriving in Findlay, Ohio, and ArtWalk is the event that celebrates it. I encourage anyone who appreciates art (or who thinks shiny, colorful things are pretty) to spend the evening perusing downtown on November 1.

5 Parks to Visit this Fall

Autumn is unpredictable to say the least. It may rain for two weeks straight. It may be 90 degrees one day and 55 degrees the next. That is why it is important get out and enjoy the amazing Hancock County parks on those few, rare perfect days before you are cooped up for the seemingly endless winter days that are just around the corner. These are my favorite five to visit in the fall and the reasons why I love them.

Visit Findlay Guest Blogger Zach shares his (and his dog, Franklin's) favorite Hancock County parks on his must-visit list this Fall! • VisitFindlay.com

Fall is the perfect time to enjoy Hancock County parks!

1. Riverside Park

While I may be partial to Riverside Park because of its proximity to my home, this is a great park to visit if you don’t have much time to drive out of the city limits. Two of my favorite features of this park are the paths that take you down to the banks of the reservoir and the StoryWalk courtesy of the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library. While these books are geared toward children, it’s nice to take a walk accompanied with a story.

The StoryWalk at Riverside Park is great for all ages!

2. Emory Adams Park

Also located within city limits, Emory Adams is my favorite for longer walk (and it’s usually a little less buggy). With several loops, it’s easy to get in a two-mile walk next to the scenic Eagle Creek. This is perfect for those crisp days while listening to music or an audiobook.

Visit Findlay Guest Blogger Zach shares his (and his dog, Franklin's) favorite Hancock County parks on his must-visit list this Fall! • VisitFindlay.com

Emory Adams offers many great paved trails, making it easy to get in a two-mile walk!

3. Riverbend Recreation Area

Riverbend has the most diversity in terms of scenery. There’s the river, great walking trails that follow the frisbee golf course, the dog park, shelter houses, and my favorite – the trails that go into the woods. There is one spot in particular that I think looks like a scene from Sleepy Hollow and I fully expect a headless horseman to come charging at me – you’ll just have to check for it yourself. This time of year, there are usually tractor hayrides so watch out for those if you are walking. If you have a dog, you can usually count on playmate or two for your pet at the dog park and it’s divided by dog-size so you don’t have to worry about a risky Great Dane/Pomeranian interaction.

4. Van Buren State Park

Van Buren State Park is great for a fall hike. And by hike, I mean my version of hiking where you’re in the woods and there’s sometimes a slight incline. None of that mountain stuff. I’m not trying sweat. BUT the lake is gorgeous and there are enough paths that it almost feels like you never go the same way twice. I’ve seen a number people enjoy running in this park, but again, not for me.

Van Buren State Park has several great hiking trails – both Zach and Franklin approved!

5. Oakwoods Nature Preserve

Oakwoods is a great park to visit based on size. You’ll get just enough outdoors, autumn walk to make you happy but not tired. It’s just long enough to finish your pumpkin spice latte (please recycle). There are two lakes on site and a butterfly meadow. However, the butterfly meadow might be more useful in the spring and summer months.

Those are my favorites but there are so many out great places to enjoy this intoxicating time of year so start exploring!

Which Findlay Favorites will be your Best of Ohio?

Voting is now closed – see which Findlay locations won Best of Ohio for 2020!

You may have heard, but Findlay was named one of the Best Hometowns of 2018-2019!  While our reign is coming to an end, we know that so many Findlay locations are amazing and deserve the moniker “Best of Ohio”Make sure to vote for your favorites before October 31!

There are 50 categories to choose from and you must fill out at least half for your ballot to be considered.  When voting make sure to include the nominee’s name, followed by the city it is located in, for example, to vote for Dietsch’s, you would put “Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream, Findlay”.

While choosing just one spot to represent our area may be tough, there are definitely plenty of Hancock County options for you to consider!

Recreation

Recreation is definitely not lacking in Findlay and Hancock County so filling out some of these categories should be easy!  The Lions Way Bike and Pedestrian Pathway is a wonderful trail that winds in and out of the picturesque village of Bluffton.  Have you visited our local state park?  The Van Buren State Park is a great option for those looking to fish, hike, bike, or ride on horseback and is a favorite of many – including our Visit Findlay Blogger Julie!  Those participating in the Hancock Park District’s Hike It Program will have plenty of opinions on best hiking trail in Hancock County while anyone who has taken advantage of Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center for cross country skiing or snow shoeing or Zonta Landing boat rental know they each deserve recognition in the categories for best winter destination and location to canoe and kayak, respectfully.

Food & Drink and Shopping

Speaking of repeat winners – there are two repeat winners in contention in the categories of Food & Drink and Shopping!  Jeffrey’s Antique Gallery won best antique shopping for two years in a row, but was unsurped last year.  Help them win back the vote this year!  Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream has won for both Best Ohio Made Candy and Best Ice Cream in the past, including best ice cream last year.  As a member of both the Ohio Ice Cream Trail and the Buckeye Candy Trail we think it needs to be under serious consideration for a win in both categories this year.  A new category this year is Ohio-Made Food, other than candy or ice cream – how can Shirley’s Popcorn not be the first thing that comes to mind!

Dietsch Brothers has been voted best ice cream and best Ohio-made candy in the past – will this be the year they take both categories?

The Hancock County Farmers’ Market has grown exponentially over the years, especially this year with its move to the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts, is that enough to earn your vote for best Farmers’ Market?  Findlay Brewing Company has been making waves for years with their craft beers, but with the opening of their bar and restaurant, we think this is the year for them to walk away with the Best Craft Brewery designation.  And Gillig Winery is our only true winery in Findlay – with their unique wines, delicious food, and great events we think they are a great choice for Best Winery.  You can’t go wrong with picking a restaurant from Findlay and Hancock County’s long list of casual dining, fine dining, or Outdoor Dining and Patio locations for those categories!

We love Findlay Brewing Company – and we bet you do too! Give them your vote for best craft brewery!

We already mentioned Jeffrey’s for the Antiques shopping category, and any of our shops would be a great choice for independent shops.  The real no-brainer in this category is Best Main Street Shopping!  With so many unique choices we know Downtown Findlay needs to be a top contender in this category.

Arts/Culture

Whether you’re seeking out performing arts, visual arts, museums, or special events, Findlay has it covered.  ArtWalk was named the best ArtWalk in the state last year (an obvious choice), and we would love to see it recognized again this year.  The Mazza Museum is arguably one of the most unique art museums in the state.  As home to over 10,500 individual children’s book illustrations and interactive displays and events it should definitely be in the running for best Art Museum.  The Children’s Museum of Findlay has grown every year since it opened and has grown into one of the best children’s museums in the state.  With the energy and transportation annex, interactive government center, and new Ag Building and Davis Learning Center the Hancock Historical Museum should be in contention for Best Historical Museum.   As far as music venue – the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts has to be on the short list!

Empty Nest? Rejoice!

My husband and I recently became empty nesters.  Everyone keeps asking us what it’s like to have an empty nest and, to be honest with you, I don’t know. I don’t know what it’s supposed to be like.  When he was in high school, he was busy playing sports, working and hanging out with his friends.    What I do know is that now we have more options for where we go to eat because he is a picky eater!

That means that we are going out exploring all the fun that Findlay and Hancock County has to offer.  Findlay Brewing Company on East Crawford Street has become one of our regular hang outs on Friday night.  There is always a new brew to try and the loaded tater tots are a must have.  Their BBQ pulled pork nachos are so big that two can share and have enough to take home for the next day or a midnight snack.

Visit Findlay Blogger Kellie recently earned an empty nest. But she shares all the reasons why an empty nest in Findlay should be happy - read why here! • VisitFindlay.com

An empty nest means one less opinion when picking places to eat and getting to enjoy all that Findlay has to offer!

Findlay is full of places to listen to live music.  After a long day or week, it’s fun to kick back with your favorite beverage and listen to some great music.  Logans, Fins Findlay Brewing Company, Alexandrias, Gillig Winery, The Greek Garden and Hull Trace Wine Winery are just some of the places that offer thirst-quenching beverages and great music.

Visit Findlay Blogger Kellie recently earned an empty nest. But she shares all the reasons why an empty nest in Findlay should be happy - read why here! • VisitFindlay.com

Being an Empty Nester has allowed Kellie to find all the places where you can hear live music in Hancock County!

Now that we aren’t sitting at the baseball field every weekend, we have time to see one of the great performances at Fort Findlay Playhouse with some of the most talented people around.  In between shows at Fort Findlay Playhouse, we like take in a show at The Marathon Center for the Performing Arts.  There are always acts I’ve never heard or realized that I wanted to see, but somehow Heather and the crew there knows I do so they brought them to Findlay for me to see (ok, well maybe not just for me)!

Visit Findlay Blogger Kellie recently earned an empty nest. But she shares all the reasons why an empty nest in Findlay should be happy - read why here! • VisitFindlay.com

There are plenty of places to take in live performances, and with all your newfound free time you can take in more shows!

Findlay feeds my competitive side.  On any given day, I can put my useless knowledge to use with The Office Trivia, 90’s Trvia, 80’s trivia, Friends Trivia and much more, held at one of our fine establishments.  Somewhere in town at any given time, I can feed by love of bingo with Music Bingo, regular bingo and purse bingo.

I have time now to check out Planet Fitness, the YMCA, Anytime Fitness, Zpulse, 50 North, Body Fix, Crawford Street Gym, Crossfit M2, XT fitness or any of the other fitness centers to lose that baby weight (yes, he’s a college freshman and I’m still trying to lose that weight!).  There are classes, equipment, nutritional counseling and so much more offered, so hopefully I can find the plan that works best for me.

Ultimately, I think I’ve earned a spa day after surviving those 4 years of high school!  I can get a massage, hair cut and color, mani/pedi, facial, teeth whitened and eye lash extensions right here at one of our many salons.  Hang on a minute while I go make an appointment!

Visit Findlay Blogger Kellie recently earned an empty nest. But she shares all the reasons why an empty nest in Findlay should be happy - read why here! • VisitFindlay.com

You’ve earned a spa day, treat yourself!

Ok, I’m back and now and I need a day of retail therapy.  I’m in luck because Findlay is home to so many locally owned boutiques that carry a wide variety of sizes and styles.  You’re never fully dressed unless you accessorize, so while I’m getting a new outfit, I will also pick up a new purse, scarf, necklace, bracelet, earrings and shoes. I can look trendy, fabulous and still dress my age.  Even though I feel like I’m still 28, the reality is that I am 28 + 22!

Visit Findlay Blogger Kellie recently earned an empty nest. But she shares all the reasons why an empty nest in Findlay should be happy - read why here! • VisitFindlay.com

A little retail therapy goes a long way!

Empty nesters get out of your jammies, sweats and T-shirts and celebrate!  Celebrate that you survived; celebrate that you raised a functioning human who is thriving at the next step in their lives; hang out with your friends who are also empty nesters and swap stories; find the romance with your significant other that you lost when you were focused solely on keeping your kid alive!

Hope to see you out soon!

Homestead Fall Farm – A Family Tradition

“This isn’t your first time to the farm, is it?” asked the gentleman who drove the tractor that pulled our hayride.

“Oh no, we come every year about this time,” we replied happily to him.

“You oughta come again just two weeks from now,” he told us. “The leaves change to their vibrant colors in October. We’re pretty proud of our woods, here.”

Our hayride captain and tour guide is also the owner of the Homestead Fall Farm, and we so enjoy our annual hayride through his woods just beyond his pumpkin patch and field of sunflowers every September.

Make a hayride at Homestead Fall Farm a fall family tradition

Our visit to the farm is one of our highlights of fall! There is literally something for everyone to do at the farm whether you enjoy the seasonal ambiance while selecting your pumpkins or the simple family-friendly fun that can captivate kids of nearly all ages for an entire afternoon. You can even make it an easy going day-date destination for any couple, complete with snow cones and hot dogs onsite!

We typically start by letting the boys climb through the docked ship. You read that right, there is a land-docked boat turned playhouse complete with a slide at the bow of the former water vessel. After that fast-fun, I put my foot down and bargain: if the boys give us their best smiles EVER for our annual photo, then Dad can get them tickets for all of the rides and games.

Smiling photos mean tickets for rides and games!

After their obligation, they head straight for the putt-putt course. After a couple of holes-in-one, we head over to check-out the farm’s newest attractions: this year, there was the rat racer. Watching our four and five year olds running in a cylinder tube attempting to get it to move from one side of a track to the next was hilarious! Of course I had to challenge Daddy – don’t worry, I won. But, towards the end of my race the barrel’s momentum caught up to me and I tumbled like a sock in a dryer. Ouch!

Inside the barn, there’s a corn filled pit where kiddos like using diggers to attempt to corral each grain. Or, they may use the pedal tractors along an indoor race track. The scent of “Aunt Sue’s” caramel apple slices waft our way and get us ready for the perfect fall snack. While we enjoy some of the fresh, gooey goodness, the boys hop into the lawnmower-pulled train of barrels for a trek around the farm.

Homestead Fall Farm has plenty to do – including snacks and a docked boat playground!

Finally, it’s time to select our special pumpkins for the year, and the boys drag a wagon through the consolidated groupings of gourds and the small, medium, large, and extra large pumpkins. I wanted to add in one of the most beautiful red Mums I have ever seen! But, my husband kindly reminded me that I almost never keep flowers alive…

Before we head-out, we have to say hello to the animals! They have adorable donkeys, goats, chickens, roosters, and pigs ready for your selfies. Some of them smile for us, too!

Make sure to stop by the store to shop – or pose for an adorable Fall-themed photo!

We love the Homestead Fall Farm because it’s hardly ever crowded on a regular weekend day, and it’s a ten minute drive from our house on the east end of Findlay. There’s so much to do that we blink our eyes and two hours have passed. My mother-in-law and I could spend a lot of time, and a pretty penny, in their gift shop but I am grateful we have kiddos there with us to stop that madness from happening. Every year there’s a little something new only adding to the whimsy and the nostalgia of this place.

I hope you’ll consider making the Homestead Fall Farm your pumpkin and fall decoration destination! My family and I have made some very special memories there.

Trojan True: Football Fridays in Findlay

This post was originally published on October 1, 2019

I’ll admit, at first it didn’t make sense to me why we would attend Findlay High School football games. We currently have no affiliation with any of the players on the high school football team and truly I’m typically a fair-weather fan, in general.

Visit Findlay Blogger Ashley shares why her family makes attending Findlay High School football games a priority - no matter the weather! • VisitFindlay.com

The walk to Donnell Stadium is part of the Findlay High School football game experience!

I’m just not that into sports. I sold my student football tickets at Ohio State a few weekends a year, I attended high school football games while a student at Findlay High mostly for the social aspect, and I didn’t grow up watching football on TV with my parents or friends. We don’t even know many of the band members of the Findlay Trojan Marching Band.

As a former fair-weather fan, Ashley has made going to Findlay High School Football games a priority…no matter the weather!

So, why is it that every week there is a home football game at Donnell Stadium we take our five and four year olds as well as our 7 month old with us and we brave the stands in all kinds of weather just to watch our local Trojans? It is probably not because the Findlay Trojans are a phenomenal football team, and it’s not because we’re alumni.

Visit Findlay Blogger Ashley shares why her family makes attending Findlay High School football games a priority - no matter the weather! • VisitFindlay.com

Findlay High School football games are for all ages – even 7 months!

We go to Findlay High School home football games because we enjoy the reverie of each stage of our Friday nights under the lights. We love gathering at a friend’s home nearby around 5:30 p.m. to eat a simple potluck meal, together. We love gearing-up for whatever weather we may be expecting (or not expecting, since we live in Ohio) and walking down the street to the stadium. We’re always hopeful we’ll stay warm and dry enough, and it’s a joy watching our boys take-in all there is to see. It’s fun to allow our boys to get excited along with the students and the fans as we enter the stadium.

Visit Findlay Blogger Ashley shares why her family makes attending Findlay High School football games a priority - no matter the weather! • VisitFindlay.com

Going to the game is part of a larger tradition, including snacks and dinner at a friend’s house!

As the lights surrounding the stadium flicker on, our oldest watches the band in absolute awe and it’s probably the only time our wild, middle child sits still. The baby claps his hands as they announce the football team and they enter their stadium with a roar behind a tiny wall of cheerleaders sprinting full-speed while they release tens of royal blue and yellow balloons into the evening sky. We do our best to take a moment to teach our children to be quiet and respectful as the crowd sings their alma mater and our national anthem. My husband attempts to explain some of the game to the boys, but mostly he corrects them on “which color” we should show our support for. That’s how they see these nights, I think. Thye see the pregame unfold into a game full of color.

Visit Findlay Blogger Ashley shares why her family makes attending Findlay High School football games a priority - no matter the weather! • VisitFindlay.com

Sometimes football games are a time to explain the rules of the sport and sometimes it is meant to remember what color to root for (or dance to the band!)

We attend the games with the same group of family and friends and the ritual is the most laid-back and family-fun way to kick-off our fall weekends. If nothing else, we take these few hours at the start of the weekend to reconnect with those we hold dear, to say hello to those we haven’t seen in some time or whom we see each week, and we envision our boys as they grow into little men who will eventually join the Findlay Trojans. They may be a band member, they may be a fellow fan in the stands, or they may take-up this football player thing and I’ll have to become an all-weather fan in our not-so-distant future. Regardless, I think every local family should start out their weekends under the lights at Donnell Stadium in the fall. It’s a safe, fun, and family-friendly way to end a busy week of work and school in Findlay, Ohio.

A Perfect Day in Findlay

Riverbend Recreation AreaThere is something about exploring Findlay that I absolutely love. I’ve done it in so many different ways, including festivals and raucous nights out, that it’s almost laughable to pick just one perfect day.

But when I sat down to write this, I found myself dreaming of those simple days. Those days when I didn’t have much to do and I could enjoy those simple pleasures Findlay has to offer.

And that’s where my perfect day starts…

A Cup of Coffee

Findlay is spoiled with some fantastic coffee shops. I could go to any of them and be absolutely happy with my choice. I like to get a bit of work done with my coffee though, and that’s why you’ll sometimes find me starting the day at Coffee Amici. A vanilla latte with almond milk is my order. I regularly see people I know here, and there’s always a bit of gossip to be shared. And that may just be what keeps me coming back.

A Walk

Findlay ReservoirThere is nothing I love more than a great walk, and luckily, Findlay has many of those. Three of those are my absolute favorites.

At the Findlay Reservoir, I find myself constantly stopping to feel the wind on my face, to watch the waves crash against the rocks and to see the dazzling light of the sun reflected off of the water. This is my favorite place to just be, so if I’m feeling particularly discombobulated, I come here.

If I feel the need to let my mind roam though, I go to the Bridle Trail at the Riverbend Recreation Area. It doesn’t matter the season. A bit of magic lies along this trail all year long. I refer to it as my own personal fairyland because of that. When fall comes, I tell friends that I need to go see how the fairies painted the trees this year. Yes, it’s a bit odd to be almost forty and talking about meeting up with the fairies. But if you’ve been on this trail, you’ve likely encountered the magic of the place and have your own names for it.

My other favorite walk is down Main Street to see the historic homes. In many ways, you feel like you’ve fallen down a rabbit hole into another time when you take this walk. And when the owners wave hello with a smile, you are almost sure you have.

Lunch

StixThe best part about spending a perfect day in Findlay is that you can take a trip around the world at the local restaurants. So when I contemplate lunch, I always think, “What country do I want to eat in today?”

I usually feel a certain pull towards Stix. The fries… Oh man, the fries. I have written sonnets to those fries. I have asked those fries to marry me. They have yet to answer. But someday…

And there’s just something about those burrito bowls to me. The bright colors of those fresh ingredients just jump off your plate. You feel like you’re eating a work of art, and in many ways, you are.

An Afternoon of Shopping

If you asked me what the best part of shopping in Findlay’s local stores, I could name off all of the unique items I have bought. And I have bought a lot of unique items. But that’s not what I love best about shopping in Findlay.

It’s by far the shop owners themselves. I have been known to lose many an hour talking to Jody Combs of RooBarb Studios about everything and nothing. And she can always steer me towards finding the perfect thing I didn’t know I truly needed every time I walk in.

And then there is Jane of Smarty Pants. I don’t have any kids of my own, but I do have an adorable great nephew. As Jane gushes about how much she loves playing with the kids in her store and how much she loves our community, she also is a wizard at helping me find the latest and greatest way to spoil that great nephew.

I have example after example of just wonderful business owners in Findlay, and that’s why it always just warms my heart to be able to spend time in their shops.

Dinner with Friends

Oler'sIf you’ve spent time on our Facebook page, you’re probably extremely familiar with Julie Brown’s love for Oler’s. It truly knows no bounds.

So my perfect day ends with her, a few other friends and an Oler’s margarita. The walls of that place have heard our laughter ring out many times, and it’s just my favorite kind of night. We solve the world’s problems. We chart new projects. Or we’re just downright silly thanks to maybe one too many of the margaritas (but really, is there such a thing as that?). It’s classic Findlay in every sense of the term, and I constantly think fondly of those nights I’ve been lucky enough to be at Oler’s.

A Scoop or Two

But can you really say you’ve had a perfect Findlay day if you don’t make a stop at Dietsch’s?

Sometimes it’s a scoop of the chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Sometimes it’s the chocolate-covered pretzels. Sometimes the peanut butter meltaways. And okay, maybe sometimes it’s all three.

With smiling faces behind the counters always making you feel like you belong here, I feel happy to indulge my inner five year old and let her have every treat her little heart desires. Because you just can’t help being a kid at Dietsch’s.

Now, what is your perfect Findlay day?

Why I Love Findlay’s Historic Homes

There are so many reasons to love Findlay.

The food scene can take you to far away lands with just a bite of an adventurous dish. Or it can give you the comfort of a favorite you’ve had many times but not quite as good as this.

The arts scene can show you world-class, established talent. Or it can make you appreciate the homegrown, new talent.

So many reasons to fall in love with this place that we call home. But my favorite is the historic homes

Historic HomeJust Take a Walk on Main Street

It seems so unbelievable that these beautiful pieces of art are just standing there asking you to appreciate them along Main Street. Their bright colors and rusty red bricks standing against perfectly trimmed lawns make you believe that you might have been dropped into another time and place.

But there they are in today’s time. And I don’t know about you, but I always walk just a little bit slower and fall in love just a bit more every time I walk down Main.

Marvel at the Historic Home’s ArchitectureHistoric Home

When I eventually find myself stopping to take in a home, it’s always the same. My eyes dart around, wondering where to stop. A strong column here. A delightful embellishment there.

These homes were not made to be utilitarian. They were made to be adored. To be loved by those that live inside and by those lucky to pass by.

Yes, it’s always the same when I stop. But I am always finding something different in a home that I thought I had memorized. That is the genius of those that built these homes.

Admire the Historic Home Owners

But the most wonderful part of these homes is not a coat of paint or a perfectly placed cupola. It’s the people that have called these places home.

These homes are in such wonderful condition because these owners have taken their places as history’s caretakers and more than lived up to the task. Their pride and their joy can be seen in each corner, and it radiates to an amazing degree.

And yet they have no desire to keep this joy to themselves. These owners regularly show that joy is only fully realized when passed onto others. So they will open their homes up for others to see. Or you might be lucky and be invited in as you gaze happily on their joyful home.

Our historic home owners are truly admirable in every sense.

So yes, I have fallen in love with Findlay for so many reasons. But the historic homes will always hold my heart the longest.

4 Ways to Stay Cool in Findlay

One thing is for sure: The temperature outside is going up! So if you’re anything like us, you are looking for ways to escape that heat.

Luckily, there are lots of ways in Findlay! Check out just a few of them here:

Read a Story at Mazza Museum

There is just something about reading a story together as a family. And it gets even better when you do it at Mazza Museum.

This museum celebrates the illustrators of children’s books, so you will find artwork from your parents generation all the way up to the latest illustrators hung up on the walls. And even better? Just below that artwork is the book it came from. So you can marvel at the characters and then read the story they are in.

Slide into the Riverside Pool

Have you really had summer fun if you haven’t found yourself in a pool? We think not!

The Riverside Pool provides you all kinds of water fun to cool you off during those hot days. You can swim around in the pool itself, play in the splash pad or have fun on the waterslides. And there’s even a shaded picnic area, so you can spend hours of fun here. Just don’t forget that sunscreen!

Explore the Children’s Museum of Findlay

There’s nothing quite like watching your kids use their imaginations. And they can do just that at the Children’s Museum of Findlay.

They can be a firefighter, a vet and more! They can even travel in the Visit Findlay exhibit. The best part is that the activities helps them learn subjects like science, technology, engineering, arts and math. And that means they’ll be ready to learn more when school starts.

Play at Smarty Pants

Yes, shopping is another great way to stay cool here. But did you know you can actually play at Smarty Pants?

It’s not unusual for us to walk in to hear little kid giggles. And you better believe we’ve seen the owner, Jane, joining in on the fun with a big smile on her face. And in addition to playing some of the wonderful games she keeps in stock, you can purchase them to bring home. Plus you’ve got to check out their great selection of books and toys!
