Spring in Hancock County

#socialdistancing selfie

Happy first day of spring! What better day to head outside and start enjoying nature?

I know there aren’t as many events going on and we’re all looking for ways to keep ourselves busy while social distancing—I highly suggest taking this opportunity to head outside!
Hancock County is home to a wonderful parks district and local town parks, there’s something for everyone at the parks.

While the weather this time of year may not be ideal, it’s also a great time to see early spring bloom!
I went to the Blanchard River Nature Preserve, and enjoyed seeing sprouts coming up in the underbrush. You can also hear the sounds of spring—the birds are singing, the spring peepers are calling, and the river beats any white noise machine. I took a few moments to just sit and appreciate how soothing it all was. If you have little ones, it’s also fun to look for animal tracks. The deer had been active and I was able to find hoof prints and places they had stopped to eat.

I’m also something of a history nerd, and really enjoy the local history found in local parks like Island Park in Mt. Blanchard. There’s a monument to Johnny Appleseed, as well as a historical marker explaining the founding of the town.

Hurricane Park was formerly the site of Mt. Blanchard School, it now has a wonderful gazebo, playground, and even a Little Free Library. I borrowed a couple of books and will be taking a few up myself later.

When the weather starts to warm up, I look forward to taking my kayak out on the Blanchard River. There are so many wonderful landings to use, and you can set a river trip that fits however much time you have, whether a couple of hours or a full day!

Finally, I challenge you to also take time to take care of Mother Nature while you are out and about. Growing up, my dad always encouraged me to take a trash bag with me on my hikes or while kayaking/canoeing to pick up any litter I found and leave things better than I found them. I had my bag with me today, and was able to clean up some of the trails I was on. It may be a small action, but I believe we can all have a larger impact.

I hope you get a chance to go out and enjoy the great outdoors. If you post to social media, tag us & use #visitfindlay, we love seeing your posts!

My Family in Downtown Findlay

The love for Findlay runs deep in my family.  My husband and I come from a long line of proud Findlayites and we couldn’t imagine calling any other place home.  The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.  I’m not certain our daughters know that there is any other place to live, just great places to visit and then return to our cozy home in Northwest Ohio.

We are out and about often, and the girls know what they like, and Downtown Findlay is just that!  They have grown to coin insider names for all of their favorite places as we spend most Saturday’s in Downtown Findlay.

Downtown Findlay is a great place for your family to spend a weekend day. Enjoy local shops, a coffee and sweets date, a workout, and an overall great day! • VisitFindlay.com

Our girls share have their own names for their favorite spots in town, pictured here at Ito’s

Mom starts the day at “workout”, with a sweaty and productive morning at the Wellness Studio Downtown.  The girls even tag along ever so often and watch attentively, waiting their turn to take the TRX straps while I end with a stretch.

Wellness Studio Downtown is a favorite place to our day

Our next stop, “Coffee and Muffin”.  This should really be called Smoothie and Muffin, but let’s not get technical, it’s actually Coffee Amici.   The girls go crazy for a strawberry smoothie or a chocolate crème smoothie accompanied with The Baking Company & Bread Kneads orange-cranberry muffin.  At times we switch it up with a Jen’s Buggy Whip cinnamon roll or just a traditional bagel with butter.  This is a good start to our weekend to discuss our plans.  Will we be heading to a cousin’s, or our own, sporting event, a trip to the pool in the summer, or a stop at the public library?  Very rarely is it a “let’s just stay at home and chill out” conversation.  Sigh.

With warmer weather we’re typically on bikes, so a stop at the playground at Lincoln School is a must.  At this point, it is lunch time and you can smell a Wilson’s hamburg in the distance.  A single with, fries and a malt to dip the fries…you can’t go wrong.

Trends on Main is a favorite spot to ogle at prom dresses (or drop off letters to Santa, depending on the season!)

These girls like to shop (I’m not sure where they get that from) and usually pull us into a local retailer.  “The dress place” Trends where they admire the prom dresses displayed in the window, Shimmery Belle or “Jody’s shop” to look at the pretties satisfies the retail obsession.

Shopping in Downtown is always a favorite!

We finally make it home for a few minutes of down time (and hopefully a shower for mom).  Before long, the questions start rolling, “what are we going to do tonight?”   Top choices are heading back downtown to “Ito’s” (Japan West) or heading slightly outside of downtown for “Tacos” (Oler’s Bar & Grill)  If we can talk them into a night at home it’s easily a “Joey’s” order.

What’s for dinner for your family tonight?

Are you exhausted just reading this???  I’ve just scratched the surface of the many wonderful options we have in and around Downtown Findlay.  Step out of the box. Try a new workout, grab a coffee, shop, and dine your way into new spaces, you’ll love it and your kids (or grandkids!) will love it too.  Trust me. #foreverfindlay

Six in a Row – Findlay Named Top Micropolitan!

For the sixth year in a row Findlay has been named Top Micropolitan in the United States for new and expanding facilities by Site Selection magazine.

The magazine annually ranks 551 of the nation’s micropolitan areas (cities of 10,000-50,000 peoples which cover at least one county) with Findlay coming out on up for the sixth consecutive year.

Tim Mayle, director of Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development, shares that approximately 1,000 net new jobs have been seen yearly over the past six years.  More information about the Findlay Formula, as well as the Top Micropolitan distinction can be found on Findlay-Hancock County Economic Development’s website.

Congratulations to all who made this distinction happen for the sixth year in a row!

Top 10 Things I Love About Christmas in Findlay

As we roll into the final days of preparation for Christmas, I took a little time to reflect on the holiday cheer that makes Findlay home.  Whether you’re a Findlay native, a transplant, or one that just comes to visit family and friends at the holidays I think you might agree with me on a thing or two on this list, or maybe you’ll even discover a tip to make your holiday experience a more enjoyable (and EASY, I’m all about easy!) experience.  A lot of it revolves around food and drink, the term Eat, Drink and be Merry was made for me!

1. Santa’s House in Downtown Findlay is a picturesque setting of holiday spirit. With Kiwanis Santa’s House at St. Andrews Church families can make a final plea with the big man himself for what they’d like under the tree, then jump on a horse drawn carriage ride and take in the beauty of the lights and good spirits on the streets of Downtown Findlay.

Visit Findlay director Alissa Preston shares her top ten favorite things about Findlay at Christmas, like WinterFest, luminaries, champagne, and tacos! • VisitFindlay.com

Santa is a must during the holidays, and there are great spots to visit him in Findlay!

2. And, the tree in Dorney Plaza is beautiful this year! The official lighting of the tree has come and gone, but we have another opportunity to join around the tree for Caroling in Dorney Plaza on December 20.   I really like singing a good Christmas carol!

Visit Findlay director Alissa Preston shares her top ten favorite things about Findlay at Christmas, like WinterFest, luminaries, champagne, and tacos! • VisitFindlay.com

Caroling around the Christmas tree in Dorney Plaza will take place Friday, December 20– see you there!

3. It seems as though impromptu gatherings at home happen a lot around Christmas. I am certain to have a stash of Dietsch’s Chocolate Covered Pretzels, Shirley’s Popcorn (Buckeye is a household fave) and Wolfies Nuts!   Just like that, it’s a party!

4. I have two young girls and they have two grandmothers that love the tradition of decorating cookies with them, so I get off pretty easy!  I do like to incorporate ad little experience of our own, so we’ve already made one Friday evening trip to  Jen’s Buggy Whip Cake Art Studio where you can decorate your own cookies and leave the mess behind.  Baker’s Café also has kits that make the decorating process easy peasy!

Cookie decorating without the mess? Sign me up!

5. Champagne, period. (see point #3 & #4)  In all seriousness, no holiday is complete without a toast to good health and fortune, so champagne is a must!  Gathering Wine and Findlay Wine Merchant have great selections of bubbly! They see my smiling face multiple times throughout the month of December.  Cheers!

Visit Findlay director Alissa Preston shares her top ten favorite things about Findlay at Christmas, like WinterFest, luminaries, champagne, and tacos! • VisitFindlay.com

Toast to the season with Champagne – a favorite of the holiday season!

6. North Pole Express at the Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation is a sight to behold. Bundle up and channel your inner-child for a train ride through a winter wonderland.  And the Christmas trees, there are 185 beautiful Christmas trees to see and an elf scavenger hunt.  So fun!

Visit Findlay director Alissa Preston shares her top ten favorite things about Findlay at Christmas, like WinterFest, luminaries, champagne, and tacos! • VisitFindlay.com

Bundle up and enjoy the beautiful sight at Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation, Inc.!

7. Gift Certificates, specifically Downtown Findlay gift certificates. Talk about one stop shop, you can pick up gift certificates in $5 increments that can be used a number of participating downtown merchants.  It truly is the gift that keeps on giving, I’m a big fan.

8. Back to entertaining, who wants to be slaving over a meal when you could be enjoying that time with family and friends?  Not us!  We have a standing order with Oler’s Bar and Grill for a catered taco bar, you really can’t go wrong with that set-up.  We haven’t mastered the Oler’s margarita recipe at home, but growler fills from Findlay Brewing Company are a huge hit.  The seasonal’s this year are amazing – Gingerbread Amber, Gose of Christmas Past, YaYa’s (my current selection!) and Sugar Plum Fairy. (It. Has Glitter!)

Cheers! Enjoy the season with a holiday brew – like Findlay Brewing Company’s Sugar Plum Fairy

9. Luminaries on South Main Street is such a treat! Either driving down the full length of Main Street with Christmas music blaring or taking a stroll along the sidewalks, this is one of my very favorite Findlay traditions.

Visit Findlay director Alissa Preston shares her top ten favorite things about Findlay at Christmas, like WinterFest, luminaries, champagne, and tacos! • VisitFindlay.com

If you hear angelic voices harmonizing the best Christmas Carols on Christmas Eve, that would be this crew!

10. The people! Findlay is second to none when it comes to breeding good people.  While shopping, dining, volunteering for a cause or just sitting around my kitchen island, I know I’m with good people and that is what makes the holidays HAPPY!

The Findlay Gift Guide

If you’re anything like me, this year has been harder than most to get into a festive spirit.  Maybe it is because Thanksgiving is so late, maybe it is because Mother Nature hasn’t been able to decide what season we’re in, maybe it is because holiday shopping is stressful and when you get started it is like a marathon – something with an end out there somewhere but you have to keep running to find it.

In an effort to help you (and, maybe, help me make my own shopping list!) here are some top gift-shopping locations in Findlay!

For the Artsy Person

I love Artsy people.  I’m not a particularly artistically talented person,  however I really appreciate some great art in any form.  Which means when it comes to buying artistic gifts for the like-minded people in my life, I know just where to go. The Marathon Center for the Performing Arts has some really great shows coming up.  Last year my cousins, sister, and I treated our grandma to a girls night out to the MCPA and it was special for all of us to spend time with each other and see a great show.  I’m planning on gifting tickets to Spongebob: The Musical (like I said, art in any form!) to my son, and concert tickets to a few other people on my list.  Plus, I can usually invite myself along to the show – two birds, one stone!

Treat the special people in your life to tickets to a MCPA show!

If you have someone in your life that appreciates fine art, make sure you go to the Findlay Art League and browse the art currently available for sale, as well as their gift shop.  The December Show is “Art of Your Home Town” opens on November 30 and will run through Christmas – and all the artwork will be on sale.  This show will display work that relates to the hometown of the artist and is sure to be full of sentimental and beautiful items perfect for an art lover.

Creative Fringe opened their doors a little over a year ago, and already had to relocate for more space.  Now located around the corner from their original location at 404 S. Main St., Creative Fringe has more space to display goods made by local artisans.  There is homemade goods, artwork, comics, upcycled creations and more waiting for you to discover and rehome as a gift.

Unique Gifts

I truly love shopping for gifts.  For me, there is nothing more fun than finding the perfect one-of-a-kind item that is going to match the recipient’s personality to a T.  Findlay has so many great shops that offer opportunities to find the right items for the unique people in your life.  I could have mentioned them above for the artsy people in your life, but Objects of Desire Artful Living is all about unique.  With artwork that will dazzle to one-of-a-kind jewelry, to hilarious gifts at all price points this is the place to go.  If you’re looking for something unique, a personalized piece will definitely hit the spot!

NEST 524 has gift ideas for everyone on your list, even the men!

Two spots that you probably visit during the holidays, but maybe not to purchase gifts are Feasel’s Garden Center and Gift Shoppe and Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream.  Feasel’s transforms their indoor space into a one-stop gift buying location.  Pick up Christmas ornaments, cuddly items for the children in your life, Vera Bradley, and, of course, garden items.  You’re naturally going to Dietsch’s during the holidays to get sweet treats, but check out their gift selection too!  Dietsch’s has a huge selection of locally made goods like honey and Wolfie’s Nuts, plus they do a great job with cute home and holiday decor!

The Perfect Outfit

Here is the problem with boutiques in Findlay, every time I visit one I end up buying way too much for myself.  I’m all about treating yourself during the holidays, but I take it to a new level.  But there is too much great stuff at our local boutiques.  From the shoes and denim at Shimmery Belle Boutique to the school spirit-wear and adorable tops at Trends! on Main to the purses and sweaters at The Urban Market to the accessories and dresses at Papillon Boutique you can find great options for all the lovely ladies in your life.

You can’t go wrong shopping at one of our local boutiques!

While you can’t get an entire outfit at Flag City Clothing you can get some great shirts and sweatshirts that represent your school, community, favorite landmarks, and Findlay quirks all while shopping local!

Vintage-Inspired Gifts

Hancock County has so many great antique and vintage shops that are just begging you to search them for the perfect gifts.  Thistle Exchange is a newcomer to this front, but they’ve already made a name for themselves as a fun place to shop and find great items.  They recently relocated off of County Road 99, conveniently located near two more wonderful spots for vintage finds.  The Homestead Collection is full of items that are sure to connect with anyone who loves antiques, vintage items, or Joanna Gaines.  And Jeffrey’s Antique Gallery was just voted the best place in Ohio to shop for antiques.  There is quite literally no better place in the state to find antique treasures!

For the Kids

Finding gifts for my sons, nieces, nephews, and young cousins is some of my favorite shopping.  You get to be a kid again, trying to find the most imaginative and fun items for the littlest ones in your life.  I’ll admit, I’ve been called “a mean mom” because I’m not a fan of video games.  Actually, I hate video games.  So I refuse to purchase them.  I’m also that aunt that buys books for birthdays, and most Christmases.  I think that makes me the coolest aunt, but my husband disagrees.  But, I hit the jackpot when Smarty Pants Findlay moved into town.  Because I still get to hold to my gift-giving-morals of buying things that won’t turn the brains of the kids I love into mush, will stimulate their imaginations, and make me really earn those Best Aunt and Mom titles.  With a huge selection of books (Smarty Pans has wonderful graphic novels – they’re especially great for reluctant readers!), board games, and  fun imaginative play sets from brands you know like Melissa and Doug and Magna-Tiles.  If you’re still lost, ask Jane or one of the employees for help – they’re a wealth of knowledge!  You really can’t go wrong when you walk in their doors!

Be the cool aunt – buy books at Smarty Pants Findlay!

If you have parents-to-be on your shopping list, give them a truly unique experience this holiday season.  First Glance Ultrasound Studio and Boutique offers gift certificates for a 3D Ultrasound experience.  What better gift to give parents then seeing their future baby.  Plus, there is some really, really cute clothes in this store!

When in Doubt…

…buy gift certificates.  How often do gift certificates save the day?  So many times I think I have everyone checked off my list and then I realize I forgot the person I’m seeing that evening.  Gift certificates to the rescue!  Luckily, there are Downtown Findlay gift certificates that are redeemable at more than 50 local spots, meaning that even a last-minute gift item is still thoughtful and local.   You can purchase them at The Alliance, 123 E. Main Cross St. in $5 increments.  If you’re purchasing more than $100 of gift certificates, please call 419-422-3315 so they can be ready in a timely manner!

I hope this helped you get in the holiday shopping spirit!  Check out all the shopping options here and stay tuned for more ideas for holiday fun.  I’ll see you in the shops!
