The Arts are important to Hancock County. Between the talented youth involved in The Arts Partnership’s Youtheatre and Hancock County Children’s Choir, the performances through the School Day Performances program and at the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts, as well as Findlay First Edition, various ballet and dance programs, musical education opportunities, and, of course, Fort Findlay Playhouse. Fort Findlay Playhouse has a long history in Hancock County. In 1933 the Little Theatre Guild was formed but closed several years later. In 1954 the group reformed into what is today the Fort Findlay Playhouse. Shows were shown at different locations throughout the city until 1968 when Fort Findlay Playhouse moved into their new home, the former Grace United Evangelical Church. This community theatre has been up and running since, bringing between 5 – 7 different musicals and shows a year, plus Second Stage presentations. As a non-profit and relying on volunteers for every acting role, as well as musicians, costumers, lighting and sound, and every other aspect, this community theatre is truly that – a theatre for and ran by the community.
The 2016 – 2017 season was recently released and brings many great opportunities for you and your family to enjoy the arts! Kicking off the season is “Legally Blonde: the Musical”, which is based on the movie of the same name about Elle Woods, a sorority girl who, through a series of events, is admitted to and attends Harvard Law School. Other shows this season are “The Mousetrap”, “A Christmas Story: The Musical”, “Run for your Wife”, and rounding out the regular season is “Boeing Boeing”. Also peppered in throughout the year are the Second Stage presentations of “A Minister’s Wife”, “Other Desert Cities”, and “Looking”. Tickets for Fort Findlay Playhouse shows go on sale 10 days before opening night and are $15 for musicals and $12 for plays, making it a great (and affordable!) date night option!
