Get Ready for the Eclipse!

Everything Under the Sun is in Tune…we’re ready for the sun to be eclipsed by the moon!

More than 18 months of preparing and planning is here – it is time for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse.  I admittedly say time and time again, I know nothing about anything, but I’ve been eager to listen and learn about this once-in-a-lifetime experience for our community.  I have a few highlights to share as you consider your final details of this celestial celebration.

Hit the grocery

The time is now! Remember that time a few years back when there was a toilet paper shortage?  You don’t want to be put in that situation again, do you?  In all seriousness, beat the anticipated traffic and get to the grocery and stock up on your Solar Eclipse party necessities as well as staple items to get you through until at least Tuesday of next week.

How should I dress?

Visit Findlay director Alissa Preston is sharing her tips to get prepared for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Findlay and Hancock County Ohio! • VisitFindlay.com

Red and Green will make your eclipse experience pop, but don’t forget to grab an eclipse shirt from a local retailer!

Always important to me!  If you haven’t already, check out the vast array of t-shirts and other eclipse gear at our local retailers.  It is also reported that the temperature will drop up to 10 degrees at the time of the total eclipse, so layer up.  During totality, the corona of the sun does some fun things to certain colors.  Try wearing red & green together, the red becomes darker and faded almost black and the green very vibrant.

Things to do at home

Taking me back to at-home learning during the pandemic.  I wasn’t good at it then, I’m certainly not now!  Imagination Station has given some fun ideas for your family to enjoy and get into the spirit of the eclipse

Pack your patience

There are a couple of takes on this tip

  • Traveling in traffic – specifically after the eclipse. Don’t expect to get in your car and return home or to your hotel or dinner plans quickly.  Hang around the party or viewing site and share stories of what you heard, saw and felt during the eclipse. If you’re eager to get to the car have water, snacks, plenty of gas, and your favorite playlist ready to entertain your passengers.
  • Get to your viewing site early, set up and get ready for the big event. You’ll want to be  settled in and ready for the first point of contact that will occur around 1:55pm.  Set up your viewing area facing southwest.

Don’t miss a thing!

Visit Findlay director Alissa Preston is sharing her tips to get prepared for the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse in Findlay and Hancock County Ohio! • VisitFindlay.com

This is the moment of totality and when it is safe to take your glasses off!

From 1:55 p.m. until the moment of totality you’ll want to wear your eclipse glasses when looking directly at the sun (Still need them? Get some here!) If you are tempted to watch the transition without your glasses – don’t do it.  3:10 p.m. (and 44 seconds to be exact) is when it is safe to view the sun and moon without glasses (don’t forget to take your glasses off!).  You will witness the corona ring around the moon.  Live in the moment, don’t try to take photos.  There will be professionals doing that and you can find them on the internet later that day and reminisce!

During that time observe the sounds around you.  Listen for animal activity – nocturnal animals will wake like they would at dusk!  At 3:14 p.m. (and 40 seconds) it’s time to put your glasses on again to view the final phases of the eclipse.

Keep an eye on the sky! Liberty will be launching Monday morning, during the eclipse, and in the evening, weather-permitting

Bonus Tip: Savor the darkness and turn off all exterior lights around your home for optimal eclipse viewing!

An Added Extra

The Visit Findlay hot air balloon will soar around the Hancock County area on Eclipse day!   We already have our eyes on the sky, so why not?  Weather permitting, the balloon will launch at 7:30 a.m., 3:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m..  Launch locations are to be determined – keep an eye on our social pages for updates!  If weather conditions prohibit flights, the balloon will illuminate and glow at Emory Adams around the time of the Eclipse.

Many more tips and questions are answered here!

This is an event Findlay and Hancock County didn’t necessarily ask for or know how to plan.  But one thing is for sure, the Findlay Hancock County community is a pretty special place.  Safety and emergency personnel are prepared to handle the load, our small business embraced the opportunity and our community has answered by supporting them – our non-profits and educators have equipped us with wonderful learning opportunities.  Take the time to enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity.  From what I’m told, you won’t be sorry.

Top 10 Reasons to Have A Positive Outlook on the 2024 Total Eclipse

Findlay will see an influx of visitors due to the April 8 solar eclipse - stay positive with these reasons from Hancock Hotel GM Dirk Bengel. • VisitFindlay.comIn the style of the great Dave Letterman, Hancock Hotel General Manager Dirk Bengel is sharing his top 10 reasons to be excited and have a positive outlook on the upcoming solar eclipse!

#10. The Eclipse will bring new people to Findlay.

As a hotel general manager I love it when people visit our community. This gives new people a chance to see what Findlay and Hancock County is all about, and that is always a good thing.

# 9.   We get to showcase the City of Findlay!

Plus, we get to show off a little bit!  Our local attractions are extending their hours over eclipse weekend so visitors can see all the fun happening in Findlay and Hancock County, bars and restaurants are launching special eclipse menus with celestial-inspired items, and see #4 for all that our stores are doing.  Any chance we get to show off to visitors – new and returning – is a chance we should take.

#8.   We will help our new visitors create memories.

The last total solar eclipse in Ohio was in 1806, when our state was just three years old.  The next eclipse in our area will be in 2099, and a total solar eclipse will not occur in the continental United States until 2045.  For many, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience – how lucky are we to be part of our visitors’ story.

#7.   We are the closest city to the ideal viewing location!

Findlay will see an influx of visitors due to the April 8 solar eclipse - stay positive with these reasons from Hancock Hotel GM Dirk Bengel. • VisitFindlay.com

There aren’t many better spots to watch the total solar eclipse than Findlay and Hancock County, Ohio!

Because of our proximity to interstates and major state routes we are in a prime location to watch the eclipse.  While we can’t know exactly how many visitors our community will see we do know that we are going to give visitors a great experience.  Watch this segment from Fox 8 in Cleveland on how Findlay is getting ready for the eclipse.

#6.   DORA- Get a drink and visit the downtown and look for the sun!

Grab your eclipse glasses and a DORA beverage and go search for the sun (safely, on the sidewalk!)  Downtown Findlay is a great place to be both in the lead-up to the eclipse as well as on Eclipse Day.  See the participating DORA bars and restaurants here.

#5.  Building return business! Show them a good time and they will come back!

As a community let’s take this time to show off our great town.  Friendly faces go a long way, but paired with Findlay’s amenities and events, great shops, and wonderful restaurants we are creating an experience that visitors will want to return to.

#4.  Stores will be busy!

Findlay will see an influx of visitors due to the April 8 solar eclipse - stay positive with these reasons from Hancock Hotel GM Dirk Bengel. • VisitFindlay.com

Local shops like Elida Candle Company have gotten in on the fun, creating eclipse merch and souvenirs.

Our stores have arisen to the occasion, creating unique and fun merchandise to commemorate the eclipse. From Dietsch’s and Wolfie’s special Eclipse treats, to jewelry, to soap, to shirts, and everythign in between – Get your souvenirs now.  Plus, don’t forget your eclipse glasses!

#3. Restaurants will be busy! Our guest will need to eat and drink!

Local shops won’t be the only ones that will be busy.  Restaurants, coffee shops, bakeries, and more will have the chance to show off their best dishes for those in town for the eclipse.  Think of how many new people you can now talk about your favorite local restaurants with (and the boost to our mom & pop spots!)

Findlay will see an influx of visitors due to the April 8 solar eclipse - stay positive with these reasons from Hancock Hotel GM Dirk Bengel. • VisitFindlay.com#2.  Heads in Beds. The hotels will be full. Just think of the tax generation.

Our hotels are reporting that they are all very nearly full – which means we will have about 1,500 overnight visitors alone in the lead-up to the eclipse!  Bed tax alone will see a boost, and that is before visitors step out of their hotel rooms!

#1. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

This is going to be a great experience for our local residents, an opportunity to showcase our community to visitors, and, the cherry on top, we will see a bump in our local economy!

You don’t have to wait until April 8 to get in on the eclipse fun.  Local eclipse events are taking place daily – see the event calendar here.  Whether you’re walking to a local watch party or viewing site, or planning to enjoy the eclipse from the comfort of your home, make your eclipse day plans now.  Get all the information about the eclipse in Hancock County at FindlaySolarEclipse2024.com.

Why I Love Living in Findlay

I grew up in a small town of 1600 people southwest of Columbus.  It was a great place grow up and I love being from there.  When I became a marital transplant to Findlay and Hancock County, I remember thinking how I wasn’t going to be able to drive here.  The county roads have numbers and letter and aren’t named and there are so many streets and one ways that I don’t know.  My husband who is a native said I would learn no problem.  Well, he was right.  I joined a church, we bought a house, I started a career in Findlay and this became home to us in 1995.  Honestly, I feel like I’ve lived here my whole life.  Recently I was thinking about all the things I love about where I live and wanted to share so hopefully you can discover (or rediscover) them.  Even if you’ve lived here your whole life there is always something new to discover!

The way we protect, support and uplift our veterans.  The support surrounding Flag City Honor Flight and social services like Hancock County Veterans Service Office is wonderful.

Our schools systems.  Whether you want a big school or small school, we have something for everyone and they are really good schools.  It’s true.  You can look it up!

Sometimes hot air balloons even land in school parking lot!

The Jolly Dipper and Archie’s.  Because sometimes you need a Coney dog and milkshake and want to get it through the drive through because you don’t look your best.

Local theater and music.  We have so many wonderful and talented musicians and thespians in our community who love to share their gift.  Don’t tell James Adkins, but he’s one of my favorites!

Marathon Center for the Performing ArtsI’m willing to travel for concerts or stage shows but it sure is nice if I don’t have to.  Musicals, live music performances, kids shows, Christmas shows, ballet, you name it I’ve seen it and I will continue to see it time and time again.  You should see it all too!

Local talent to national touring shows – all can be found right here in our hometown!

A big town with a small town feel.  That’s my best description of Findlay.  I know people and they know me.  We call each other by name.  We build trust and relationships and I just really like that.

Local shops and restaurantsI used to have a job where I traveled all over the United States.  When I got to the hotel I always asked for local restaurant recommendations because I want to experience something I can’t eat at home.  I’m so grateful Findlay has so many local restaurants that visitors have such a long list to choose from!  So many great choices with any type of food that makes your tummy happy.

Shopping for a special occasion or just because is easy in Findlay.

I love that we have so many cute shops and we keep getting more.  I like to shop local and get items that not everyone will have.  We are getting more men’s apparel stores so that is definitely a good thing and I love the vintage shops too.

We are a giving community.  We support non profits and give of our money and our time to help those who need it and to make our community better and that says everything right there.  We’re like a warm blanket on a cold night.  Need a couple ways to support local and give back? Check out Giving Tuesday promos here!

Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates & Ice Cream.  That goes without saying.  One of our favorite things to do is to get Dietsch’s and go for a drive.

Chocolate, Ice Cream, Candy – you can’t go wrong at Dietsch’s!

Cruise Night.  I love cars.  My dad was a mechanic and I paid attention to cars.  I love that our community supports the fact that cars are cool and we need to appreciate and respect the past in order to make the future better.

The houses on South Main StreetI love the fact that people buy them and work to keep them up.  That can’t be easy.  So from those of us that drive up and down South Main Street – Thank you.

Thank you historic South Main home owners for doing so much work to make my drive special every day!

Our parks.  We have wonderful parks and nature areas and our naturalists are eager to educate and share their experiences.  Where you want to learn about bats (no thank you), go down a large slide, swing fish, host a family get together, swim, walk, or bike.  You can do it here and feel safe.

Our leaders are always trying to better our community and listen.  I enjoy the fact that I can tell our Mayor I have an idea and she sets up a meeting to discuss my idea.

I would love to know what you love about Findlay and Hancock County.  It’s a great place to live, work and play and I’m not just saying that because they’re paying me to because they’re not paying me!   I really to believe this is a great place to start your career, raise a family and retire.

Keep it up Findlay and Hancock County.  You’re doing it right.

Attend your Hometown Festival

This blog post was originally published in July 2023.

Summer is now well in its prime! What does that mean exactly? Well…it means hometown festivals are coming up! Why is that important? Because hometown festivals are the biggest events of many small town summers, especially in Hancock County. These events often include games, food, and music (just to name a few).

Don't miss your summer hometown festival! Hear from Visit Findlay guest blogger Chloe Rau on why she thinks village festivals are important. • VisitFindlay.com

Hometown festivals are something to look forward to every year!

However, fun is not the only reason these festivals are important. Hometown festivals bring together every generation, ranging from those who have grown up in the village to those who are still growing. Parents and grandparents get to watch as their kids and grandkids enjoy the same experiences they once did and they’ll get to feel that lovely feeling of nostalgia. People could also enjoy watching how the younger generations enjoy changes in festivals with the times as much as the things that stayed the same.

Don't miss your summer hometown festival! Hear from Visit Findlay guest blogger Chloe Rau on why she thinks village festivals are important. • VisitFindlay.com

Hometown festivals are more than just a thing to do, they help build bridges between generations

Take the Arlington Village Festival for example. When asked, many of the older residents of Arlington remember homemade noodles being a big part of their festival, while the younger residents of Arlington may remember more of the games they play and the food trucks all around. Older residents will also get to see the younger ones enjoy the new sports zone added to the festival this year as well.

My personal experience with the Arlington Festival finally hit its peak this year as I got to make a video to advertise a new addition to the festival! While that on its own was a lot to look forward to, I will also be taking videos for another part of the festival this year. So watch out for a girl asking you to tell the camera what your favorite part of the festival is! Besides all of this stuff, I enjoy the food and time with friends I get out of the festival (especially the food). See Chloe’s 2024 video celebrating the festival’s past, present, and future here!

So when the festival in your town comes around, think about stopping by! Whether it be for nostalgia, food, games, memories, all of the above, or none of the above!

Designer’s Block

It has been said that creativity is merely intelligence having fun and I, for one, couldn’t agree more. You see, I’m an unapologetic creative who is incredibly passionate about all things design, so I fully appreciate and embrace the extraordinary process of moving a creative vision to a tangible reality. Yes, perhaps I do have a bit of a love affair with seeing how people creatively breathe possibility into things that seemingly have very little intrinsic value at first glance. To me, the creative process is deeply personal, something that shouldn’t be compromised or rushed. However, I’m pretty certain, most people have experienced a “designer’s block”, of sorts, where the fear of making the wrong design decision leads to absolutely no decision at all.

I’ll be the first to tell you that while I creatively design in my day-to-day work life, most of my design blocks occur right here at home. I mean, how many of you have agonized over the perfect paint color, fixtures, landscape, etc. to the point where it seems easier to just do nothing? You name the design dilemma and we’ve all probably been there, done that! But what if I could actually get you excited about experiencing a designer’s block? Of course, this will require me telling you a little story, but stay with me for just a moment. I’m sure you’re all probably wondering, what in the world does this design talk have to do with our community? Oh, for the love of Findlay! Design has absolutely everything to do with it, so come join me for a little stroll around the block and I’ll tell you all about it.

I have always believed that design is merely a metaphor for life because both involve creating spaces, taking chances, learning from mistakes, and making the very most of what you have. You can choose to include all the things you cherish, mix it up when you need a change, and share it with people who may or may not appreciate it the way you do. I’m a natural-born risktaker, so you can you bet your sweet board and batten that I’m an advocate for those homeowners who risk setting a bold design table, have the audacity to throw open the curtains to illuminate it, and send an open invitation for anyone to critique or enjoy it.

If the truth be told, I am that homeowner, I take those risks, my curtains are always wide open, and there is always a standing invite waiting just for you. I take great pride in honoring and preserving my home’s historic past, but make no mistake, I’m all about bringing the sass when I start “zhuzhing” up the place. Let’s just say I tend to bring my Type A personality to every single design party. I only design for myself, but when your curtains are open it’s easy to inadvertently inspire others to take new design risks. And that, my beloved community, is exactly where this story begins.

In 2018, we bought a 1903 home in Findlay’s historic district and have spent the past few years transforming it. It is nothing short of a labor of love and I take exceptional pride in being a temporary steward of a home that reflects and maintains our community’s historical legacy. Of course, when you own an old home, you accept home improvement as an ongoing process that never really ends. I’ve been known to take on some pretty labor-intensive projects, because I have a bit of an obsession with sunshine, sweat, and the sense of accomplishment that only comes from a hard day’s work. So, if you happen to see me outside on the weekend and I look like I need a glass of water and CPR, please know that I’m in my happy place!

In addition to the never-ending project list, I was also traveling extensively for business during that same time. One of things I miss most when I travel is what my husband and I have deemed “porch coffee”. It’s the time when we brew our favorite pot of hot black coffee, sit on the porch, talk about all the important things, and strike up interesting conversations with all the passers-by. I had just come home from a pretty chaotic business trip to Boston when my husband suggested we grab some porch coffee to wind down from the whole experience.

You can imagine my surprise when I opened the front door and noticed a door hanger hanging on my screen door. The Hancock Historical Museum had placed door hangers on various places throughout our community just to say “thank you” for helping preserve the historic integrity of our community. As I read the message, my heart was full. It said, “We see you and we want to say thanks!” – what a powerful message! On the surface, it seems like such a small gesture, but in that moment, I can tell you that it felt pretty darn good to be seen.

Listen, I know how easy it is to get caught up in your own hustle, I’ve done it my whole life. But there is nothing more valuable than taking the time to “see” people, especially those who live right here in our community. After watching Findlay grow and evolve over the past 47 years, I can tell you that it’s filled with small town charm and hometown pride. That’s why I’ve decided to blend my love of design with my love of people. I guess you could say I’m about to re-design the meaning of a designer’s block. In its most traditional sense, a designer’s block is when people struggle to generate creative ideas – a roadblock, of sorts. But look out Findlay, we’re about to turn this definition inside out!

You’ll have an opportunity to “see” the people in our community through the eyes of a creative design geek as I highlight the design elements that inspire me, one random block at a time. Whether it’s stunning architecture, striking color combinations, elegant front doors, beautiful décor, dramatic landscaping, or just incredibly creative choices by other unapologetic risktakers who have opened their curtains, I am coming to “see” you.

And as it is in life – no risk, no reward. For this reason, I’ll not only highlight some of the best design elements, within a totally random block, but will drop a “design bomb” (a.k.a. d-bomb) on my favorite commercial or residential space within it. What’s a design bomb, you ask? Well, it’s just a creative gesture to let you know that I “see” your intelligence having fun, appreciate the inspiration, and formally acknowledge you as “d-bomb” of your block. If seeing is believing, let’s lace up those walking shoes, go pound some pavement together, truly see the beauty of our community, and acknowledge the bold, creative people living in it.

Eat Seasonally: December

Every season brings new flavors, and at Findlay restaurants that oftentimes means new seasonal or monthly specials!  Visit Findlay blogger Regina Fox explores these menus and brings you her recommendations to make each meal a memorable (and flavorful!) one!

Findlay Brewing Company

Exciting seasonal specials are brewing on Crawford Street this winter. Findlay Brewing Company has three specialty menu items on tap this month only.

The Spicy BBQ Burger brings the heat on these cold winter nights. Sandwiched between a brioche bun, this burger is anchored by an 8 oz. beef patty and adorn with pepper jack cheese, onion ring, bacon, pickled jalapeno, and BBQ sauce.

A comfort food favorite, FBC Chili is made with ground beef, red beans, and kidney beans. It is topped with cornbread croutons, cheddar cheese, and green onion.

Green and red are the colors of the season and you’ll find plenty of both in the Holiday Salad at Findlay brewing. This dish features mixed greens with shaved Brussel sprouts, apple, dried cranberry, blue cheese crumbles, and whole grain mustard vinaigrette.

For more spirited diners, there are an array of handcrafted cocktails made specially for this season, like the Holiday Cranberry Mule, Amaretto Eggnog, and Hot Apple Cider Bourbon.

Logan’s Irish Pub

The revolving menu at Logan’s Irish Pub has landed on some tasty delicacies this winter. The December Cork Board features six stick-to-your-bones plates sure to satisfy a wide range of palates.

Logan’s combines a beloved spud variety with a savory meat from the sea with their Lobster Loaded Potato Skins. This dish features crispy fried potato skins topped with lobster americaine, smoked bacon, melted mozzarella, and romano cheese.

Pescatarians rejoice at a second swimmingly good appetizer, Smoked Salmon Dip, made with hot smoked salmon blended with fresh herbs, cream cheese, and spices served with toasted sourdough crostini.

Which Logan’s December cork board item are you going to order?

Logan’s Pesto Chicken Melt piles a grilled chicken breast melted with roasted garlic and basil pesto aioli, sliced tomato, swiss and provolone cheese atop a garlic and herb Buttered Country Bread.

The taste of Ireland is featured in the Sirloin au Poivre. The Guinness-infused lentil-barley pilaf, roasted carrots, and cracked pepper cream sauce are the perfect compliments to the tender pepper-crusted sirloin steak.

To sweeten the pot [of gold] this winter, Logan’s will be offering a Cranberry Orange Panna Cotta. The citrus-infused vanilla custard is served with marinated cranberry-orange compote and a generous drizzle of spiced red wine-honey syrup.

The Gathering

A local, handcrafted meal is best enjoyed amid the intimate ambiance of The Gathering. There’s something about the solace of the brick-lined, open-beamed interior that makes the upscale American dishes taste even better, especially on cold winter nights.

The Winter Bucatini combines the freshness of wild mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, gremolata, and wilted spinach with the savoriness of pancetta lardon, lamb bolognese, parmesan, and crostini.

Transport your taste buds seaside with The Gathering’s Paella. Shrimp, chicken thigh, and Spanish chorizo rendezvous amongst saffron bomba rice, sweet pea, bell pepper, onion, Gathering herbs, Spanish sofrito, and lemon.

Speaking of the coast, the Cajun Shrimp and Grits spotlights cajun dusted jumbo shrimp accompanied by hatch chile cheddar grits, red pepper, fennel, Spanish onion, spicy tomato fennel broth, parmesan, and lemon.

For a sweet and snowy treat, the Winter Sundae features vanilla pound cake, Belgian chocolate candy cane ice cream, cheesecake ice cream, cherries jubilee, gingersnap crumble, white chocolate chips, and chantilly cream.

The decadent Espresso Cheesecake is Zingerman’s espresso custard, almond tuile, Belgian chocolate ganache, espresso maple drizzle, chantilly cream enveloped in a chocolate cookie crust.

No matter what you choose you’ll enjoy fresh, seasonal flavors in Findlay this December!
