Finding my Findlay Favorites

While completing my first year at University of Findlay, I had an opportunity to explore the City of Findlay between my classes and studying, here are my 10 favorite places!

1. George House

When I don’t have a lot of time, I just walk right across Main Street to George House – it is so convenient to have a coffee shop right across the street from the University and is one of my two favorite coffee shops in town.  Besides the amazing coffee and drinks, George House quickly became one of my favorite spots to study or meet with friends. I think this is one of my favorite places simply because of the atmosphere; I am an avid reader, so I love and appreciate the shelves and shelves of books.

2. We Serve. Coffee

However, when I’m not in a rush and have time to go Downtown, I always go to We Serve. Coffee! This is such a special place, not only because of their amazing coffee drinks in lots of unique flavors, but because of their cause. We Serve. Coffee serves all fair-trade coffee and they donate their profits to local charities.

3. Fort Findlay Coffee and Doughnuts

And, what goes best with coffee? Doughnuts!  I was first introduced to Fort Findlay Coffee and Doughnuts by one of my professors who brought in donuts to my class. The caramel apple doughnut that I got was so good that I knew I needed to check this place out. My favorite thing to get is a “long john” as I call it, or a “cream stick” as some of my friends correct me- either way, its delicious!

4. Dietsch Brothers

Before I even started at the University of Findlay, there was one place my family would always stop anytime we came to town – Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates and Ice Cream. Dietsch’s has been a family tradition for many years, my grandpa went to UF back when it was Findlay College and he always brings ice cream balls from Dietsch’s to each family birthday party.  After coming to college, many of my friends quickly fell in love with Dietsch’s too, and we set a goal to try every flavor of ice cream by the time we graduate!

5. Archie’s

While Dietsch’s has amazing hard dipped ice cream, when I’m in the mood for soft serve I always go to Archie’s! They have a huge menu, so I know that there is a flurry, shake, and sundae for everyone. Archie’s is also close to campus, so while it is still warm out, my friends and I love to walk there- because the walking cancels out the ice cream, right?

6. Wilson’s

After coming home for the summer, I have certainly missed all my favorite places in Findlay to grab a bite to eat! Up first is a classic – Wilson’s.  My grandpa would bring me here when I was little after going to UF basketball games. My grandpa is 82 now, and he still goes to every UF basketball game… and takes me out to Wilson’s afterwards. Malts are my favorite thing to get at Wilson’s – I love to sit at one of the stools along the window and dip my French fries in it, but you can’t go wrong with a hamburger and pie!

Head to Wilsons for a malt, hamburger, and fries!

7. Main Street Deli

Another one of my favorite places to eat is Main Street Deli.  Two of my teachers from high school graduated from the University of Findlay and the first recommendation they gave me was Main Street Deli. During Homecoming weekend they came to town and treated me to a meal.  After that great experience I was so excited to find out that Main Street Deli is one of the local restaurants on the UF dining plan too.

I love Main Street Deli – even more because of it is on UF dining plan!

8. Heavenly Pizza

Throughout my first year of college, I learned that there is way more opportunities for 11 p.m. pizza runs than I would have ever thought. After ordering a lot of pizza, I quickly decided that Heavenly Pizza was my absolute favorite.  I was sure that no other place would be as good as my hometown favorite spot, so I was pleasantly surprised when Heavenly Pizza met my high expectations.  I think my favorite thing about their pizza is the sweet sauce- so yummy!

9. Flag City Clothing

While Findlay has so many great places to eat, they also have lots of cool places to shop, one of my favorite stores is Flag City Clothing! They have such a nice selection of graphic tees, Findlay and Ohio apparel, and sweatshirts. I got one of my favorite Dietsch Brothers shirts from Flag City Clothing and I wear it all the time!

10. Findlay Reservoirs

If I had to pick my one, absolute favorite place in Findlay, it would be the Riverbend-Findlay Reservoirs. I first went to the reservoir when Campus Ministry had a sunset worship night, and it has been one of my favorite spots since. The reservoir is a great place to go for a walk and the water is calm and quiet in the mornings, making for a peaceful start to the day. It is also a great place to take a blanket and read, study, or have a picnic. However, my favorite time to go to the reservoir is at sunset- it is always so beautiful, and after the sun goes down, I usually like to stay and look at the stars for a bit!

Back to College: Findlay Style

As I prepare for my junior year of college (yikes, time needs to slow down!), I like to think that I have figured out what to do to prepare for returning to campus. I’ve spent the last few months getting items ordered and organized, but now that move-in is just a couple weeks away, I only have a handful of things left to do. There are few places in Findlay I like to shop at every year before heading back to college.

It’s no secret that many college students live off of coffee during the school year. Pick up a bag (or five) of your favorite roast from Fort Findlay to brew in the morning.

Visit Findlay Blogger Olivia shares how she is preparing to head back to college with all the Findlay and Hancock County essentials! • VisitFindlay.com

Which brew(s) will you be taking back to college?

Because I am living off campus this year, I have needed to get furniture for my house. As a college student, I am not able to afford brand new pieces of furniture, nor do I think it’s necessary for a college house to be filled with items that new. Findlay is home to a variety of stores that sell repurposed furniture at reasonable prices. I have found great items at Shabby Chic Boutique and Cammy’s that are perfect for my situation.

Shabby Chic has some great items that are perfect (and priced) for a college house.

It’s easy to feel homesick when you’re away at school. When homesickness hits me, I throw on a Findlay-themed tee from Flag City Clothing and sport it around campus.

Take some Findlay pride back to college with some shirts from Flag City Clothing!

We all have important people we leave behind when we head to college. Before my freshman year, I ordered custom bracelets from RooBarb for me and my best friend to wear while I was away from her and from home.

RooBarb Studios has customized jewelry and some grab and go items, like these cute necklaces.

For the last two summers, before I have gone back to school, my family and I have gone out to dinner at a restaurant of my choosing for my last meal of the summer. I genuinely could not tell you where we have gone either summer, but I can tell you it’s hard to go wrong when eating out in Findlay.   I think I’ll be hitting Rossilli’s or Findlay Brewing Company in the next week, or maybe both!

Don’t leave Findlay without visiting your favorite restaurants, like Findlay Brewing Company!

Leaving home isn’t the easiest thing, but by taking items from places like these to school, I always feel like I have a few small pieces of Findlay with me.

Silver Linings during a Pandemic

Normally when I write for our website I’m coming from the position of getting a chance to share what aspect of our community my family explored recently (or where we want to!), where I went shopping, where we ate out and really enjoyed, how I plan to spend (both time and money) an upcoming holiday, and more.  But, this time, I want to share a different perspective as a member of your Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Findlay and Hancock County may not even realize how large and robust the hospitality industry is in our community.  Comprising of restaurants, shops, museums, parks, stages, coffee shops, attractions, galleries, and, of course, hotels.  We help represent all of them and share what they’re doing on VisitFindlay.com and our social media pages.  It is the best and most fun job.

Visit Findlay's Danielle shares all the positivity and ingenuity she has witnessed in Findlay over the last 5 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. • VisitFindlay.com

When I needed photos of doughnuts from the newly reopened Bakers Cafe, Eli and Grant agreed – I do have the best job!

It can be really easy to focus on what we’ve lost this year due to the pandemic.  The cancelled events, the financial toll, the impact on our physical and mental health, and the effect on personal relationships is huge.  But one of the things that has sustained me during this time is the local response from an industry one could argue has been impacted the hardest – our hospitality community.

I’ve been so inspired by the way these people, our neighbors and friends, have navigated the pandemic and the subsequent fall-out.

It has been made clear that indoor theaters and performing arts centers will be the last to reopen.  But Marathon Center for the Performing Arts has made sure the show goes on.  Heather Clow and her team at MCPA put on drive-in concerts featuring local bands, coordinated online performing arts camps for youth, and connected us with the performing arts on their Digital Stages page.

MCPA brought the arts, even when the curtains were closed with Digital Stage programming, virtual shows, and drive-in concerts!

MCPA wasn’t alone in developing online programming.  Hancock Parks continues to provide virtual content 3 times a week, while maintaining our parks and allowing our community to enjoy the beauty of local outdoor space, social distant of course.  The Findlay-Hancock Public Library has transitioned story time, makerspace, and book club discussions all online, even as they safely reopened their doors.  Mazza Musuem provided story time from the familiar faces kids are used to see during much-missed visits and later added interviews with the illustrators whose work is in the museum (stay tuned for Mazza’s big plans in the fall!) The Black Heritage Library and Multicultural Center added honest monthly community conversations on Facebook Live the first Thursday of the month, adapting to not just the pandemic, but also in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Visit Findlay's Danielle shares all the positivity and ingenuity she has witnessed in Findlay over the last 5 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. • VisitFindlay.com

With life turned upside down this Spring it was nice to see familiar faces, like Mr. Ben from Mazza Museum reading a story!

The volunteers behind Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation and the staff behind The Children’s Museum of Findlay were able to find safe ways to reopen as soon as the health department cleared them to do so.  Findlay Art League will safely host their first in-person show of the year this week in their freshly updated gallery.

Smarty Pants Findlay blew me away with their quick and responsible reaction to quarantine orders.  As shops were asked to shut their doors Jane Hassan did so and immediately switched her focus to online sales.  Jane loaded all the inventory on to the site and then was the first to offer curbside pick up, as well as same-day free delivery, meaning her books, puzzles, workbooks, toys, and games would arrive faster than large online retailers, oftentimes with much better prices, all while supporting a local, small business.

Visit Findlay's Danielle shares all the positivity and ingenuity she has witnessed in Findlay over the last 5 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. • VisitFindlay.com

Smarty Pants Findlay saved the day (many times) with contactless same-day delivery of gifts for Easter and birthdays, plus Kwik Stix to make some Ohio Proud window art!

When restaurants had to shutter their doors due to the pandemic I worried.  No surprise, they adapted easily and creatively.  I could list how every single restaurant impressed me – transitioning their sit down dining experience to a takeout focus by adding curbside pickup, online ordering, and many even added delivery.  Restaurants like Stix and Fins added specials and family packs, recognizing that instead of feeding us on a night out they were now feeding our households at our dinner tables.  They gave all of us at home a taste of comfort when nothing in our lives was comfortable.

Visit Findlay's Danielle shares all the positivity and ingenuity she has witnessed in Findlay over the last 5 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. • VisitFindlay.com

Stix is one of our favorite places to go for date night, so we brought date night home with a family pack of Sake Fried Chicken for the whole family.

Lastly, our hotels.  Located along busy traveled routes they stayed open for travelers trying to make it home in the middle of a pandemic.  Hearing the logistics behind keeping the hotels open is inspiring, to say the least.  Keeping their visitors, their staff, and our community safe became their number one priority.

And the list could go on and on.  I could talk about the Lunches of Love at We Serve. Coffee or the pay it forward program at Heavenly Pizza.  I could talk about the robust Facebook Live Shows at Trends! on Main or how quickly and nicely patio dining sprouted up in our downtown.  I could wax poetic about how impressed I am with the team at the Hancock Historical Museum for pivoting every fundraiser event they had planned to fun passports, weeks-long event series, and the innovative and fun activities planned for the upcoming Oktoberfest week.  I could also mention the new businesses who used this time to open their doors for the first time, like Summer Creek Apparel and Crafted Nano Brewery.  I’ve been left impressed at every turn. Did I miss the many summer time favorites?  Absolutely.   There were so many opportunities to just throw up our hands and give up, but the positivity of the people behind these community favorites, their ingenuity and adaptability kept me going.

Visit Findlay's Danielle shares all the positivity and ingenuity she has witnessed in Findlay over the last 5 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. • VisitFindlay.com

Many locations used the shutdown as a chance to renovate, move locations, or even open a new space – like Summer Creek Apparel on Sandusky Street in Downtown.

By no stretch of the imagination are we out of the woods yet.  The impact of the last four months will last a long, long time.  But our community has proven we can withstand strong winds and high waters and now a pandemic.  At the risk of sounding very cheesy, we’re #InThisTogetherOhio.

Early Findlay Residents

Be sure to catch Pat’s first installment exploring Findlay and Hancock County’s history here.

The first permanent family to settle in Findlay was the Benjamin Cox family moving in around 1825.

Benjamin Cox and his family were the first white, permanent settlers in Findlay

Mr. Cox chose to occupy one of the block houses that remained in the remains of the fort.  The view from their humble abode was an expanse of underbrush hemmed in by the forest along with tree stumps leftover from the building of the fort.

Visit Findlay blogger Pat Bauman explores deeper into our community's history - in this installment she explores Early Findlay's residents! • VisitFindlay.com

Their home was one of the buildings that remained from Fort Findlay

Wilson Vance was the next settler and he occupied the other block house.  As more settlers arrived, they had to build their own shelters.  There was a simplicity to the lives of the early settlers and they became used to a hard life with very few comforts.  Food was not a problem as game was plentiful.  Corn and potatoes were planted and a few families raised hogs.  Wilson Vance was responsible for laying out the town of Findlay which contained less than one square mile.  According to the plat he drew up, the town went north and south from Front to Back Street and east and west from East Main Street to West Main Street.  (Back Street eventually became Sandusky Street. )

It is interesting that after Mr. Vance platted Findlay. he enlarged his cabin by erecting an addition  and opened a tavern.  This became the local point where people could talk and drink.  It was also a place that lured the hunters, trappers and travelers and was an ideal spot for picking up local gossip.  The tavern was also the place to post special notices.

Why Findlay?

Its Early Beginning

Hancock County was named for John Hancock, President of the First Continental Congress, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  Hancock County was previously part of Wood County.

Visit Findlay guest blogger Pat Bauman shares her knowledge of the early history of Findlay. In this installment Pat shares the story of Fort Findlay. • VisitFindlay.com

Hancock County was named for John Hancock, President of the First Continental Congress and a signer of the Declaration of Independence

Findlay, the first settlement in the county, owes both its location and name to the War of 1812.  Ohio had been a state for nine years.  A fort was erected for the defense of the Old Northwest, and was named Fort Findlay. One of the regiments was headed by Colonel James Findlay. Aside from his name there is no evidence that he ever had anything to do with the history of Findlay.

Fort Findlay was built on the west side of the now named Main Street by the river.  This site was chosen as the width of the river was narrow enough in that area and could easily be forded.  The fort consisted of a stockade ten feet high made of logs placed upright.  A block house was erected at each corner.  These were two-story structures with the second stories extending over and beyond the line of the stockade, so as to command the approaches in all directions.  Each block house was furnished with a small piece of artillery.

Visit Findlay guest blogger Pat Bauman shares her knowledge of the early history of Findlay. In this installment Pat shares the story of Fort Findlay. • VisitFindlay.com

Small cabins were erected against the stockade inside the fort to house a token garrison of 15 men and officers.  The fort was staffed until 1815.  There was no military action of any kind here and fears of Indian attacks never materialized.

Visit Findlay guest blogger Pat Bauman shares her knowledge of the early history of Findlay. In this installment Pat shares the story of Fort Findlay. • VisitFindlay.com

When the garrison was removed, a man by the name of Thorpe, who had served as baker and storekeeper, remained for a short time in a cabin on the east side of present Main Street where he carried on his trade.  Eventually he moved away.  Other than the military, he may be considered in all probability the first white resident, but not the first settler in the county.

Kayaking the Blanchard River

A Tour Through Nature and into Lasting Memories

You never know what kind adventure awaits when kayaking the Blanchard River. Paddles gently dipping the water offer peaceful moments of relaxation, as nature stands poised to unfold her beauty.

In early April, our family purchased three kayaks at the urging of my son, who worked very hard around the house to earn the cash to buy his own. These were some of the best purchases we’ve ever made, as we continue to unwrap this gift from spring into summer.

Kayaking provided a comfort throughout the COVID19 stay-at-home order I will never forget. Spring kayaking is chilly, but we were desperate to get outside and catch a little freedom. During those trips, I wore a heavy sweatshirt, wind breaker, winter hat, gloves – and a need for relief.

When we kayaked last week, it was tank top time, and in contrast to the darker spring, a level of the COVID burden has lifted, at least for now.

Visit Findlay blogger Sarah shares her family's experience with kayaking on the Blanchard River, perfect for a fun, family-friendly outdoor activity! • VisitFindlay.com

The whole family enjoys kayaking on the Blanchard River!

We found ourselves in awe of the richly blossomed flora along the riverbanks, now in full summer glory. Fluffy white clouds drifted overhead as cheery sunshine warmed our skin. A gentle breeze cooled us. Blobs of cottonwood floated gently on the water, all the while quiet dips of the paddle pulling us forward through the smooth, serene water.

Summer!

Between the kids’ (Rosalynn, 11, and Ben, 14) and my experience at the Findlay Reservoir, Lake Erie, the Portage River, and the Blanchard River, our favorite is the Blanchard. We use Eastpoint Landing, on Main Cross Street, right by the Bright Road bridge.

Kayaking has brought fun for everyone, including Rosalyn,11 and Ben, 14

If you don’t have your own and want to rent a kayak, canoe or pedal boat visit Zonta Landing Boat Rentals inside Riverside Park. Rentals are available for $5 per half hour on the weekends from 1-7 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Gliding East on the Blanchard

Each direction on the river offers its unique charms when you enter the water on Main Cross. Traveling east, it feels more secluded. The sound of road traffic is quickly replaced by singing birds, rustling leaves, and of course the splash of the paddle. This route takes you behind nice homes set back along the trees and water on one side and undeveloped land on the other.

Visit Findlay blogger Sarah shares her family's experience with kayaking on the Blanchard River, perfect for a fun, family-friendly outdoor activity! • VisitFindlay.com

Traveling East you can see beautiful homes on one side of the river and undeveloped land on the other

One of the best parts of kayaking is the encounter with nature. Birds swoop by or nest along the riverbanks, among them striking blue herons, cardinals, blue jays and other colorful birds. Somewhat surprising are the numerous turtles of all sizes we find sunning themselves, sometimes five or more all in a row on a log. We like to keep a running turtle count while kayaking – our highest has reached the 30s! We’ve seen frogs, many vibrant dragonflies, an array of fish, and, on this side, deer.

Visit Findlay blogger Sarah shares her family's experience with kayaking on the Blanchard River, perfect for a fun, family-friendly outdoor activity! • VisitFindlay.com

How many turtles will you see on your kayak trip?

Paddling West

Gliding west on the river offers its own array of fun. The encounters with nature continue, and this direction runs past the Findlay Country Club, with its scenic golf course and clubhouse. It is pleasant to glide under the course’s two bridges, but keep an eye out for golfers! Those little white balls seem destined for water. Yet, deviant ball collection is a perk for the kids.

Visit Findlay blogger Sarah shares her family's experience with kayaking on the Blanchard River, perfect for a fun, family-friendly outdoor activity! • VisitFindlay.com

Paddling West on the Blanchard is fun – but watch out for stray golf balls as you approach the Findlay Country Club course!

You never know who you might see on the course to chat with or who might be out enjoying the water. We’ve run into people manning other kayaks, canoes, small boats, fishermen and women in the water and out, and even paddleboarders. There’s an anticipation in seeing someone in the distance slowly getting closer and closer, and a jolly camaraderie on the river.

The river winds through the course and a beautiful channel, then along Riverside Park. The kids and I sometimes “dock” our kayaks at the little island near the waterfall and explore, usually to discover nesting geese and ducks who find our presence slightly alarming. We take a snack to eat on the island and relax.

Visit Findlay blogger Sarah shares her family's experience with kayaking on the Blanchard River, perfect for a fun, family-friendly outdoor activity! • VisitFindlay.com

Take a break and enjoy a snack wherever you can – including a little island in the middle of the river!

I enter our trips on the MapMyRun app, which can track kayaking. I like to review the map of our trip when finished, and for those in search of an awesome no impact workout, kayaking provides a fantastic calorie burn. (I burned 440 calories? Whoohoo!)

Most of the time the Blanchard is calm, evoking a sense of peace as you quietly glide through the water. After a significant storm however, we’ve seen it rushing and carrying heavy limbs and debris. We learned the hard way to respect the power of the water – so a word of caution. Enjoy – but not when it looks like that!

Memories in the Making

Kayaking is one of my favorite things to do – and one of my kids’ favorites too. We have a wonderful time enjoying nature, we chat, soak in the summer sun, get great exercise, and learn more about ourselves.

Visit Findlay blogger Sarah shares her family's experience with kayaking on the Blanchard River, perfect for a fun, family-friendly outdoor activity! • VisitFindlay.com

Kayaking is a great activity for family bonding and to make special memories

I wasn’t sure if Rosalynn (11) would be able to manage a kayak on her own. I’m so glad we took the chance that she could because the challenge has revealed in her a confidence and strength she didn’t know she had. As for Ben, he couldn’t be happier with his purchase. He loads and unloads it from the truck with the greatest of care, and plans to add fishing from kayak to his repertoire.

Me? I enjoy all of the above and get to make sweet memories with my kids – the greatest joy in kayaking of all.

Paddling Van Buren State Park

Growing up my parents took my siblings and I all over to go hiking and kayaking.  Which makes it embarrassing that before this summer I had never been to an Ohio State Park located less than 15 minutes from my house.

It is fitting that my parents were the ones who convinced me to go.  Although I’ve had a kayak for a couple years (guess who that was a gift from?) I haven’t used it nearly as much as I should, especially since there are so many places in Hancock County to go kayaking!  So when my parents asked if I wanted to kayak with them and my sister at Van Buren State Park I had to say yes – and I’m really glad I did!

It was a beautiful day to go kayaking at Van Buren State Park!

Getting to the boat launch at Van Buren State Park is really easy.  You can go straight there by following TR 218, bypassing the park and going past Adventure Bound Camping Resort, before heading South on TR 229.  There is a small parking lot on the right where you can leave your car and put your kayaks in the water.  This is also a great spot to jump on one of the trails!

Once we divvyed up who was riding with who – it is always a fight over who gets to ride with Papa, who is known to hide water guns in his kayak! – we decided to paddle the main part of Van Buren Lake first.  This was a really calm paddle and very beautiful.  We were the only ones on the lake and it was very peaceful…until Eli and I had to race my sister to the other side of the lake (we won).

Visit Findlay's Danielle shares her experience kayaking with her family at Van Buren State Park! • VisitFindlay.com

These two definitely do not have water guns hiding and ready to spray you as you paddle along!

Because things aren’t simple, we had to rearrange kids a couple times, which was a challenge, but every one stayed dry (even Bella, my parent’s dog, although she really, really wanted to go for a swim!). In the lake we saw fish, a couple turtles, and lots of egrets and herons which kept the kids entertained.

The big race loser!

We thought the lake was all that we could paddle, but as we were making our way back to the launch we passed others that had explored down the creek that was on the other side the bridge, later Google Maps taught me that it was called Rocky Ford Creek.  Originally we thought it wasn’t wide or deep enough to paddle, but it is and is definitely worth checking out!

Everyone had a great time paddling at Van Buren State Park, including Bella!

We paddled pretty far down this section (bug spray is strongly recommended!), this was extra fun for the kids who let their imagination go wild and we were transported to the jungle with all the tall trees lining both sides of the water.  Unfortunately, no alligators or jaguars were discovered!

Grant and I looked everywhere and no alligators were found!

If you’re looking for a good spot to ease back in to kayaking, or trying it for the first time, Van Buren State Park is a great place to do so.  It was a really fun afternoon that we all enjoyed and will definitely be back – hope to see you there!

The Great Soft-Serve Ice Cream Debate

This post was originally published in July 2020

Look, we all did some crazy things in quarantine.  Some completed the Heinz Ketchup puzzle.  Some binged Tiger King.  Some home-schooled their kids, which wasn’t actually crazy but drove them crazy (🙋‍♀️).

For our family, as soon as the ice cream stands were open we implemented a weekly ice cream dinner treat, which was really a “Mom isn’t used to cooking this much, please let’s get dinner at the ice cream stand and we can pretend it is a well-rounded, nutritious dinner”.

The apparel in this photo (and those quarantine buzz cuts!) shows how early the weekly “Ice Cream for Dinner” began for the Wilkin family

The good news is, I didn’t have to cook (please see the alternative name of ice cream for dinner night).  The bad news is that it started causing major disagreements about where to go.  So, we went to all of them…many times.  And, the good news, they’re all really, really good.

So to save you the calories (or to encourage you to eat at more of them) our family presents a collective opinion on the ice cream stands of Findlay and Hancock County:

Archie’s

Ah, Archie’s.  A classic.  It feels like warm weather is around the corner when I see the drive-thru full of cars waiting for a treat.  It is worth the hype and the long line of the drive thru.

You know its Ice Cream for Dinner season when Archie’s is open!

Ice Cream: I have 2 weird ice cream orders (S’mores flurry or a hot fudge milkshake – both with chocolate ice cream if I feel like living on the edge!) and Archie’s knocks them both out of the park.
Food: Did you even go to Archie’s if you didn’t get the classic shredded chicken sandwich?  It is an absolute must, but Archie’s has a long menu of great items that will give you non-ice cream options to eat!

Corner Dairy Bar

I truly love the village of Mt. Blanchard.  The people there are some of the nicest I’ve ever met and they love their town, it is a quintessential Midwestern small town, they have awesome events, and are so welcoming.  So, of course we had to go to the Corner Dairy Bar and try it out for the first time.
Ice Cream: The kids went rogue and got slushies, cutting my taste testers in half (although they would recommend the slushies!), so my husband and I picked up the slack.  I got one of the specialty sundaes and Jake got a ginormous milkshake which made us both very, very full and very happy.
Food: The food is so good!  My husband had a Falcon burger, I had a walking taco, our kids had hot dogs (keep reading, this is a theme) and we split a selection of fried sides.

Jolly Dipper

Our house is a divided one – I am a believer in rich ice cream, the more chocolate the better!  My husband is on the hunt for fruity concoctions.  Jolly Dipper makes both of us happy.

Dole Whip flavors rotate at The Jolly Dipper, where you can also pick up a concoction like this!

Ice Cream: Not only does Jolly Dipper have regular ice cream, they also have a rotating variety of different Dole Whip flavors.  For someone like my husband this is the promiseland of Ice Cream Stands.
Food:  You must order the Big T!  It is so good that my husband went to pick up ice cream for dinner last week and realized when he got home with the Big Ts that he forgot the ice cream.

Mr. Twister’s Ice Cream

We’ve been Mr. Twister’s customers for years – it is within walking distance of our house, which makes Mr. Twister’s a healthy option because it has exercise with it.  For those avoiding dairy try their Almond Swirl choices that change weekly!

How cute are Mr. Twisters faces? Pictured here with the famous-in-our-house Unicorn Dreams!

Ice Cream: The soft serve is great, and they get their hard dip from Toft’s with names that make eating it more fun (our kids were on a Unicorn Dreams kick for a while!)  The ice cream experience is even more fun with the faces they put on the ice cream by request – mustaches included!
Food: While I always default to the pulled pork nachos, my sons and husband are eating their way through Mr. Twisters long list of hot dogs.  My youngest prefers the plain hot dog, my oldest likes the foot long with different toppings, and my husband still has a few kinds to try, with the Spanish Dog in first place.

Shady Grove

Have you ever been talking to someone and mention having to drive ALL the way across town and what a hassle it is?  This is me with Shady Grove.  But one day it was time to face that long, long, 10 minute drive all the way across town and give see what all they hype was about.  I can confirm, it is worth it.

Work up an appetite with a round of Putt Putt before ice cream at Shady Grove!

Ice Cream: Delicious!  And it tasted even better after a round of putt-putt!  We will try it again after a round of foot golf and see if we yield the same tastiness level…for science.
Food: I don’t know why, but ordering food at Shady Grove made me feel like I was at summer camp for all the best reasons.  The food is good and nostalgic and it is fun to sit in the shaded picnic tables and gobble it all up!

We hope you implement ice cream for dinner too – whether to create memories or just take the easy option to feed your family!  Wherever you choose, you can’t go wrong!

Create a Memory

Painters’ Pottery has extended their hours in July just in time to create an Independence Day weekend memory with your family.  Pick a piece to paint together or each pick a piece and show off your skills.  Painters’ Pottery will fire the piece and they will be ready to pick up in a couple weeks!  If you can’t make a return trip, your piece can be shipped for an additional cost.  See what other shops are open this weekend here.

Find the perfect piece to commemorate this (very weird!) Fourth of July!

Hit the Water…

Did you know that the Blanchard River was recently  named the newest official water trail from ODNR?  And what better place to spend the holiday than the water!?  Either rent canoes or kayaks or bring your own on the Blanchard River Water Trail.  Canoes and Kayak rentals are $5/30 minutes (cash only) and can be rented at Zonta Landing, located inside Riverside Park.  Learn more here
