Spending Father’s Day in Findlay

Father’s Day is this weekend, so you still have some time to make sure Dad has a great day!  Check out some of our ideas here:

Feed Dad

Celebrate Dad in Findlay! See our suggestions on how to feed, spoil, and spend time with your father this Father's Day in Findlay! • VisitFindlay.com

Tony’s, the new home of the Hancock Sports Hall of Fame, is a great place to sit and enjoy Father’s Day, or take it home to enjoy there!

Feeding Dad will be easy this Father’s Day.  Takeout is available from many of his (and your) favorite restaurants, and several are running Father’s Day specials.  Tony’s Restaurant & Pub is running a special for dine-in or take-out, and who’s dad wouldn’t like Tony’s delicious BBQ?  Plus, did you know Tony’s is the new home of the Hancock Sports Hall of Fame?  Want to cook at home?  The Findlay Wine Merchant has been offering some great specials on provisions each week, this week they have a beef tenderloin that is trimmed, seasoned, and ready to hit the grill.  Miller’s Meats and The Dough Hook also have great meat packages for a family cook out at home.  And, don’t forget the cocktails to go!  Takeout drinks are still available from your favorite local bars and restaurants.  So if Dad has been talking about wanting an Old Fashioned from The Bourbon Affair, you can hook him up (just make sure to order it on Saturday!), Findlay Brewing Company is open on Sundays, so enjoy dinner at FBC or to-go, but definitely get a growler or crowler of this local brew.  Other local favorites Dad might enjoy on Sunday are Alexandria’s, Dark Horse, The Fern, Kathy’s Korner, Oler’s, Southside Family Restaurant, and Wildcat Cafe.

Spoil Dad

Celebrate Dad in Findlay! See our suggestions on how to feed, spoil, and spend time with your father this Father's Day in Findlay! • VisitFindlay.com

Thistle Exchange is constantly adding new items that would make a perfect Father’s Day gift, like this buffalo weather vane!

Need a gift for Dad?  Spoil him this Father’s Day with a local gift.  Objects of Desire Artful Living has many beautiful and artistic gift options…but they also have some high-brow humor items that will be sure to have Dad cracking up (we especially love the BlueQ socks!).  Thistle Exchange is full of beautiful items that anyone would enjoy, especially Dad!  They are constantly changing up the items in their shop, so now is a great time to pop in and see what you can discover.  Not that you need an excuse to visit RooBarb Studios, but their selection of gifts especially for men is a great one.  Pick something up for him, and maybe a few things for yourself too!

Spend Time with Dad

Is your dad missing live music? Celebrate Father’s Day on Saturday night and take him to MCPA’s Drive-In Concert featuring 12til2!

There aren’t as many events on the calendar as normal right now (but there is still a lot going on!), so you may be worried about what to do with Dad this Father’s Day.  Celebrate early with MCPA’s Drive-In Concert Series!  This concert will take place Saturday evening and is fun for the whole family.  The June 20 concert features local favorite 12til2.  If you miss out this week, celebrate Father’s Day a little late and take in the June 27 concert with Tongue n’ Groove.  If your Father’s Day celebrations include little ones make plans to visit Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation, which is reopening on June 20.  Rides on the quarter-scale train are always affordable, but this year they are offering Season Passes!  If your celebrations are including kids of the 21+ variety, hit up some of the spots on the History with a Twist: Craft Cocktail Passport!  This program is launching this Friday and will run all summer, try the cocktails at the participating locations and vote for your favorites!  You can purchase the passports at the Hancock Historical Museum beginning Friday, June 19.

If you’re looking for some chill Father’s Day plans you can always visit our parks, rent a canoe or kayak at Zonta Landing, enjoy a quiet country drive with Barn Quilt Trail, or walk the self-guided Historic Homes Walking Tour.

However your family is celebrating Father’s Day in Findlay we hope it is a great one!

Post-Quarantine Wish List

Now that the next phase of Responsible RestartOhio has been announced and we know that our favorite museums and attractions will soon be safely reopening, it is easy to get excited about what fun is going to look like in this very weird summer.

Part of my kindergartner’s last week of school homework was making a summer bucket list and after 2 months of being at home I know he wasn’t the only one that listed all the local spots he couldn’t wait to visit.  As these locations are safely reopening we (very excitedly!) made a wish list of the locations we are looking forward to visiting soon!

The Playground

When I asked my 7 and 4 year old sons where they wanted to go when all the germs were gone they both said The Playground.  “Which playground?” you may be wondering (I was!), “All of them” they replied, and Findlay and Hancock County has a lot!  Fort Findlay Playground is always a favorite, and kids can spend hours using their imaginations while playing.  Whether they’re pioneers or knights, this playground located at Emory Adams is a great spot to visit.  Our other favorites are at Riverside Park (extra fun when paired with the StoryWalk), Riverbend Park, and the Miracle Playground and All-Star Playground at Marathon Diamonds and Miracle Field.  Playgrounds are reopening June 10.

With quarantine's end in sight we are ready to make a wish list of the museums and fun Findlay favorites we are looking forward to visiting! • VisitFindlay.com

Riverbend Park’s playground is one of the many that are on our Wish List!

Mazza Museum

Quickly following the playgrounds were each of the boys’ favorite Findlay places.  My (almost) 7 year old’s birthday is this weekend and it has been a tradition that we end the day at Mazza Museum.  Between the artwork, books, and, of course, the slide, the Mazza Museum has truly been missed.  While we’ve tried to recreate some of the Mazza magic at home, we can’t wait to experience it in-person!  Mazza Museum will be reopening soon!  Until then, take a virtual tour of the museum with the Mazza’s app (Download the app in the App Store or in the Google Play Store), enjoy storytime from some familiar Mazza faces, and tune in to Author Mondays!

With quarantine's end in sight we are ready to make a wish list of the museums and fun Findlay favorites we are looking forward to visiting! • VisitFindlay.com

We miss all that the Mazza has to offer – upstairs and downstairs!

Children’s Museum of Findlay

My youngest son’s favorite Findlay spot is definitely the Children’s Museum of Findlay, and we have really missed our trips!  The Children’s Museum is especially great for our family because it is one of the few places both of my kids are fully entertained for a very long period of time.  Whether it is jumping (and jumping, and jumping, and jumping) in the foam pit, pretending to be a firefighter or veterinarian, going camping or to school, or even riding in an ambulance, the Children’s Museum of Findlay is a great place to exercise your child’s mind.  The Children’s Museum of Findlay will be reopening July 7.  In the meantime, order a Play at Home box!  This box will be full of items picked by museum staff for your child (best for ages 4 – 8) to play with at home.  Boxes can be picked up or shipped for an additional fee.

With quarantine's end in sight we are ready to make a wish list of the museums and fun Findlay favorites we are looking forward to visiting! • VisitFindlay.com

It won’t be too much longer before the xylophone will be played again!

Marathon Center for the Performing Arts

The Marathon Center for the Performing Arts put together a great season, full of family-friendly shows that we were looking forward to, and we are already looking forward to the next time we can take a seat in the auditorium and be entertained.  Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long before MCPA brings the entertainment….just in the parking lot, rather than the auditorium.  June 13, 20, and 27 MCPA will be hosting Drive-In Concert Series!  We will be able to park our car, tune the radio to a special station, and enjoy a live concert by local favorites being projected onto an outdoor screen.  We’ve already got our tickets – get yours here!  MCPA Box Office is open Monday – Friday, Noon – 4 p.m., as is the Fisher/Wall Art Gallery.  MCPA is also bringing the fun home with Virtual Youtheatre Academy and Mini-Camps in June and July.  Make sure to also check out the Digital Stage, which can be enjoyed any time by all ages!

With quarantine's end in sight we are ready to make a wish list of the museums and fun Findlay favorites we are looking forward to visiting! • VisitFindlay.com

It might be a little while before these seats are filled, however the show will go on – in the parking lot! The Drive-In Concert Series will take place June 13, 20, and 27!

Hancock Historical Museum

A favorite quarantine TV show has been PBS Kids’ “Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum” where three kids go back in time and solve their modern-day problems with lessons learned from historical figures.  It has really made my oldest interested in history – so a trip to the Hancock Historical Museum is in order!  While there may not be any actual time travel involved, we definitely will use our imaginations to take us back in time and learn from the people who lived the moments and used the items immortalized in the museum.  Moments like the Women’s Suffrage Movement, the Underground Railroad, transportation through the years, our community’s farming history, and more.  The Hancock Historical Museum is now open, see the guidelines here!

With quarantine's end in sight we are ready to make a wish list of the museums and fun Findlay favorites we are looking forward to visiting! • VisitFindlay.com

What can a samurai teach us? We will find out on our next trip to the Hancock Historical Museum!

Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation

Our youngest is obsessed with trains, so we are really missing our trips to Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation!  Train rides are really affordable and are the perfect length of time for antsy kids who need to get the wiggles out.  There are two trains to choose from, so multiple rides are necessary around the track and it is fun to look out the window and wait for the horn to blow.  Of course the train rides are the highlight of a trip to NWORRP, but going into the museum and seeing the model trains is always extra fun!  NWORRP will be reopening June 20.

With quarantine's end in sight we are ready to make a wish list of the museums and fun Findlay favorites we are looking forward to visiting! • VisitFindlay.com

Train ride time can’t come soon enough – plan your upcoming trip to NWORRP!

Visiting our Downtown Friends

This one was hard for me – because I miss it too!  I am not original in saying the thing I love most about Findlay and Hancock County is the people, which is something that has been passed on to my kids.  They love taking “a walk in town” and into our favorite shops in Downtown Findlay.  They’re already looking forward to getting coffee (hot chocolate – I promise!) and lunch at our favorite spots, popping in to shops to say hello to the familiar faces waiting to greet us, and window shopping.  See your favorite shops’ current hours and policies here, and restaurants’ hours and policies here.

We’re looking forward to visiting our favorite places and seeing our favorite places around Findlay and Hancock County soon!  What is on your Post-Quarantine Wish List?

This blog post is written by Visit Findlay Community Relations and Development Manager Danielle Wilkin.  Danielle is a reality TV aficionado, frequent Downtown diner, and a busy mom!  That isn’t much, is it?  See more about Danielle and read more from her here!

Doughnut or Donut – Eat them all!

It doesn’t matter how you spell it, a doughnut (or donut) makes everything better.  Glazed, Cake, Filled, Jelly, Holes, Iced, With Sprinkles or without – a good doughnut is one of the few perfect things in this world.

Lucky for you – there are several places to get a really good doughnut in Findlay and Hancock County:

Fort Findlay Coffee and Doughnuts

1016 Tiffin Ave., Findlay
419-425-5550

The second you walk in to Fort Findlay you know you’re in a for a treat.  While right now you can’t take seat at the bar, or find a booth to gather with friends, you can still get your doughnuts and coffee to go – or grab a bag of your favorite brew to make at home.  Have a real doughnut lover in your life?  Order a doughnut cake for their next celebration!

Glazed or Sprinkled, Filled or Frosted, Jelly or Cream, no matter how your prefer your doughnuts (donuts?) you will enjoy all these Findlay locations! • VisitFindlay.com

It won’t be long before you can find the perfect seat at Fort Findlay Coffee and Doughnuts and stuff your face with the doughnuts of your choice!

The Baker’s Cafe

408 S. Main St., Downtown Findlay
419-422-7133

When The Baker’s Cafe moved to their new, larger location on Main Street they also added new items to their beloved menu…including doughnuts.  Baker’s Cafe has great options for a doughnut lover with classic filled sticks and iced options, but they also try fun twists on flavors that change option, like cookies n’ cream or fresh strawberry.

Glazed or Sprinkled, Filled or Frosted, Jelly or Cream, no matter how your prefer your doughnuts (donuts?) you will enjoy all these Findlay locations! • VisitFindlay.com

Baker’s Cafe may be the newest face on the Findlay Doughnut scene, but it is a really pretty face! These doughnuts were almost too pretty to eat, but we did our best.

Curly’s Doughnuts

100 S. Main St., Arlington – temporarily closed
419-365-4044

Curly’s Doughnuts is the new home to the Arlington IGA doughnuts we all love.  While they’re still temporarily closed, you can just dream of the glazed croissants that melt in your mouth, the rich long johns (and little johns), and all your other favorites we’re missing until the next time we can order!

Glazed or Sprinkled, Filled or Frosted, Jelly or Cream, no matter how your prefer your doughnuts (donuts?) you will enjoy all these Findlay locations! • VisitFindlay.com

Sorry, just wiping drool from our faces as we look at this photo of Curly’s Doughnuts’ choices! We can’t wait for them to reopen their doors!

Tried & True Favorites

Step 3: It is ArtWalk time

The best way to virtually attend ArtWalk is to begin on Friday, November 6 at 5 p.m. so you can click along live and interact with your friends on our facebook page.  However, the best part of the internet (in this case anyway!) is that once it is posted it is there forever!  So even if you’re clicking along with us on Saturday or Sunday, or even in the coming weeks or months, you can still get the virtual ArtWalk experience.

We may not be able to gather in person, but you can still run in some of your favorite 5K races! See what races are being held virtually in Findlay Ohio! • VisitFindlay.comThe great outdoors!  I think we’ve all turned to the great outdoors more than ever in recent weeks.  A sunny day outside is great, but even with rain, snow, and wind we continue to embrace Mother Nature for a quick breath of fresh air.

I’ve dusted off my running shoes, something I gave up a couple of years ago and just flat out stopped making time to get a run in.   But, running has allowed me time to “unplug” and take note of many wonderful places and spaces in our community.

The spring has long been known as a 5K wonderland, and many of the groups that planned races and walks are going virtual with their events this year.  In the coming weeks, there are a number of opportunities to embrace physical activity and support one of the many wonderful community organizations.   Let us not forget about our non-profits during this time of uncertainty.  The non-profit community is a huge piece of the puzzle that makes Findlay/Hancock County an amazing community.

I hope to see you (from a distance, of course) on the street or in the parks getting your miles in to support a cause and enjoy the great outdoors.  Share your pictures with us!  #RunFindlay

Sheltering in Place during Springtime in Findlay

After the first week, I think we all got real with ourselves and thought: How am I going to get through this with my sanity intact after another 2 (and then another 4) weeks?

There’s no school, no routine, and no separation from my kids during the weekdays. I can’t send them down the street to go “bother the neighbors while Mommy finishes dinner”. Findlay has some of the most amazing playgrounds, like the one at our Miracle League Field, and we are not able to go burn-off energy at any single one of them on these beautiful springtime days in Ohio!

Visit Findlay blogger Ashley shares how she and her family are adapting during quarantine with games and activities at home! • VisitFindlay.com

We’re dreaming of afternoons spent at the Miracle Playground!

COVID19 has seemingly taken away any trace of normalcy and all of those things we enjoyed as a family before the sickness at this time of year.

However, I think I can show you that hope is not lost, Findlay parents! And, you don’t have to resort to the most dreaded of all activities: play dough. a.k.a. A Parent’s Nightmare. Who wants to spend hours cleaning up the sticky bits now embedded into your carpeting?

Visit Findlay blogger Ashley shares how she and her family are adapting during quarantine with games and activities at home! • VisitFindlay.com

Skip the play dough and find fun at home!

While we are sheltering in place to protect each other, there are many, many ideas I’ve found for not only keeping busy with a 6, 4 and 1 year-old, but ideas I truly feel have helped us to grow closer together during this time. And, I’ve still managed to find ways to work from home productively. Care to learn more?

Virtually, the ideas I’ve seen others share are endless! Fortunately, we have Skype and FaceTime and Zoom meetings to visually connect with the ones we miss and love. I’d recommend shopping for some new Family board games from Smarty Pants and then inviting Grandparents to FaceTime with their grandkids for a “Game Night”. Ask your children to be in control of Grandma and Grandpa’s game pieces and move them around the board. You’ll be amazed at their newfound patience and the giggles from your in-laws or your parents on the other end of the call!

On one particularly rainy day, I concocted an indoor obstacle course and surprised my kiddos. They didn’t want me to take it down! Baring in mind any rain, you could consider setting up an outdoor obstacle course, too. Allow them to help you build it so that they may work on strategy, too. The outward display of fun and ingenuity is bound to be contagious with the neighbors, as well!

I am sure I am not alone in cleaning out the cob webs and all of my junk drawers during this time. I say, make it a family practice! By allowing your kids to assist in the organizing of all-the-things, then you have given them perspective on how things can accumulate and how it can be helpful to give everything its own place. I am not saying you Marie Kondo your life (I personally don’t think that’s entirely possible with kids, but that’s a different conversation). But for me, I can finally stop hearing my family members say, “I don’t know where it that goes?”

Brinkman’s Market has opened their garden center and because they’re an essential business you could grab any pertinent groceries from their store before visiting their greenhouse.  Go select seedlings to start your own family garden! I do not have a green thumb, but I know many people who do, so why not have a Zoom call and let them give you and your kids a lesson on planting? If gardening is not something that interests you, you could select items to make a fairy garden or an indoor terrarium. There’s just enough science to it all that I feel it counts as a “home-school” lesson and by allowing your children to be a part of it they’re working on expanding their horizons and, consequently, their imaginations.

Brinkman’s Country Corner has all you need for a family garden, which makes a good for a science project too!

I may be a mom of boys but that doesn’t mean I can’t still enjoy a little pampering with them! Journey Salon and Day Spa is offering home deliveries on all of their products! You could have a family spa night. That may just mean taking a minute to clip everyone’s nails, enjoying a foot soak, and applying lotion to extra-dry hands and elbows. All of that hand-washing has my hands in pretty rough shape!

And lastly, let’s not forgot the multitude of local restaurants we’ve been missing… fortunately for all of us, some of our beloved establishments are still offering daily and weekly specials and home-delivery! I recommend keeping up with the Facebook or Instagram pages of Bellacino’s, Stix, The Baking Company and Bread Kneads, Logan’s, We Serve.Coffee, and Cedar Valley Cafe. On Fridays, Findlay Brewing Company (FBC) is offering buy one get one half off flatbreads! Plus, FBC and places like Oler’s can help you enjoy a beer or a margarita To-Go, thanks to Governor DeWine legalizing the sale of alcoholic beverages with carry-out orders. It’s just another way you can support local AND enjoy a night off from cooking.

Save your receipts to all local spots you’re visiting for the Community Cash reward program!

My number one piece of advice is to find a routine and schedule. We may not be running to the ball field or piano lessons or to-and-from practices, so we can fill those time slots with fun, productive, and educational activities where we bond with our kids or family members. By still keeping a schedule, you will allow for a happier, healthier time away from the norm.

Maybe after reading this you’ll agree there is still so much to enjoy! That may be a daily walk around the neighborhood checking-out everyone’s windows for teddy bears and Easter eggs and witnessing all of the camaraderie even when we have to keep and respect 6 feet of separation. Or, you might be enjoying free, virtual admission to our world’s amazing museums! Visit Findlay has rounded up virtual/socially distant activities from partners in one spot, so be sure to check that out, too! Regardless, we’re in this together and I am certain you will find something worthwhile to do with your kids and your family while we shelter in place in Findlay, Ohio.
