Live@Armes: A Listening Experience

I grew up listening to classic county music – Patsy Cline singing “Crazy” on the stereo and my grandmother playing “Your Cheatin’ Heart” on the piano. Like most people my tastes changed over time. But between my pop music phase, hair metal phase, and angsty female singer/songwriter phase, I always returned to my roots – the plaintive sound and tragic lyrics of traditional country. Now people give it a whole host of hip labels like Americana, roots and newgrass but I just call it good music.

These genres are best experienced in an intimate space, so MCPA reimagined Armes Hall as a listening room, complete with a bar, tables and (my favorite) a neon sign. What serves as a banquet hall, meeting room, and rehearsal space is transformed into a welcoming environment where musicians and fans can connect. Over the past five years the combination of a hip space and talented artists has helped the Live@Armes series has develop a loyal following that grows with every concert.

Armes Hall has been reimagined in to an intimate listening room, complete with a bar, tables, and a neon sign.

And now we’re excited to announce that the Live@Armes series is expanding to monthly shows year round! The line ups will be released four at a time in January, May and September of each year.

Live@Armes is bigger and better than ever with shows every month!

The initial “set” includes the previously announced VickiKristinaBarcelona concert on May 19. This powerhouse band is the epitome of cool: three veteran (and stylish) musicians who re-imagine the songs of Tom Waits with skillful harmonies and quirky instrumentation including banjo, squeezebox and zills.

On June 16 Armchair Boogie brings their unique sound to the series. Born on a front porch in the heart of Central Wisconsin, Armchair Boogie pushes genre boundaries with their fusion of acoustic banjo and guitar and a driving rhythm provided by bass and drums. This dynamic 4-piece band’s repertoire ranges from lightning-fast bluegrass and fiery funk to straight up honky tonk and extended jams combine to deliver a live concert experience that’s been described as “a good ol’ party of a show.”

Eliot Lewis is a frequent visitor to Findlay and has built a dedicated fan-base in town, but July 28 marks his first official Live@Armes appearance. Well known for his work with Hall & Oates, Todd Rundgren and other musical superstars, as well as the hugely popular show “Live from Daryl’s House,” Eliot is also an immensely successful solo artist. This multi-instrumentalist seamlessly moves from guitar and keyboard to bass and drums creating his own distinctive band of rock and soul.

Findlay favorite Eliot Lewis will make his Live@Armes debut in July

Darin and Brooke Aldridge’s rich harmonies and impeccable musicianship creates an unmistakable sound that has made them one of the hottest young acts in bluegrass, gospel and traditional country music scenes. Brooke is a 4-time International Bluegrass Music Associate Female Vocalist of the Year. Her husband Darin sang with the acclaimed band Country Gentleman. Together they have racked up seven #1 bluegrass singles, 25 appearances at the Grand Ol’ Opry and they come to Live@Armes on August 18.

A Beginner’s Guide to DORA

Before you enjoy Findlay's DORA be sure you know how it works! Check out our beginner's guide to enjoy legally and responsibly here. • VisitFindlay.comWhen the weather is nice there are so many opportunities to utilize DORA.  If reading that sentence immediately makes you think of a little explorer with her trusty backpack and monkey, Boots, you may not have been in Downtown Findlay much over the past year.

DORA, or Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area, was enacted in Downtown Findlay nearly a year ago.  If you aren’t familiar with DORA you may have been wondering what those colorful decals mean that are outside many of your favorite Downtown restaurants and shops – well we have you covered!

Ok – but what is DORA

Before you enjoy Findlay's DORA be sure you know how it works! Check out our beginner's guide to enjoy legally and responsibly here. • VisitFindlay.comDORA is exactly what it stands for – it is a specific area where you can enjoy your favorite alcoholic beverages.  There are a few catches:

1) Your drink MUST be in a DORA cup and purchased from a DORA location

2) You must stay in the boundaries.  Our community’s DORA is located in Downtown Findlay – see the exact map here.  The boundaries are clearly marked with signs to help while you’re walking around!

3) DORA drinks can be enjoyed outside and in locations that allow them and are marked with a green decal (keep reading to learn more about the decals!)

4) DORA is from 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. daily – so no DORA beverages before 11 a.m. or after 11 p.m.

How do I know who is and isn’t a DORA location?

Findlay’s DORA is made up of the 18 locations that have liquor licenses in the district – and they all have a blue DORA decal outside their door and you can see the complete list here.  To get a DORA drink you simply need to ask for your beverage in a DORA cup to-go and, when you receive it, exit the location.  You can either order it to enjoy while you’re waiting for a table outside the establishment or at the end of your meal to-go – however, you cannot drink your DORA drink at the bar.

How do I know if I can take my drink inside a shop?

Locations within DORA are all marked with color-coded decals to make it as easy as possible

Learn more about the Findlay Flint Glass Company

Blogger Pat Bauman is taking you through the history of Findlay’s glass industry.  You can read her previous blogs on The Columbia Glass Company, and Dalzell, Gilmore, and Leighton companies here.

The fifth and last flint glass company to locate in Findlay was the Findlay Flint Glass Company.  This was a new company organized in Findlay November 5, 1888.  Several prominent men were connected with the company:  Attorney Elijah T. Dunn, Ernest Bacher and David T. Winders.  There were several non-local investors, as well.

Construction of the factory commenced January 18, 1889.  The 85’ x 210’ brick and stone building had one furnace.  The first glass made at the factory was August 12. 1889.  The factory had its own private gas well that provided plenty of fuel and it employed about 150 people.  The factory was totally destroyed by fire of an undetermined nature on June 6, 1891, after only 23 months of operation.

Plans were made  to rebuild the factory but this never came to be.  It went to sheriff’s sale March 10, 1900 and the real estate was sold for $100 to local investor Emanuel Wyssbrod.

Model Flint Glass Company

Blogger Pat Bauman is taking you through the history of Findlay’s glass industry.  Read her previous blog posts here.

The Model Flint Glass Company was the fourth tableware factory to locate in Findlay on the east side of Bolton Street between Prentiss and Lester Avenue. Agreements were signed with a Findlay land syndicate in 1888, for a factory site and supply of Fuel.

This was a new company composed of Findlay people and money.  Anderson C. Heck, a prominent Findlay businessman was president of the company.  Frank Bigelow and William and Elmer Stephenson were several of the stockholders and directors.  Local architects, Kramer & Zoll drew up plans for the factory building.

The first glass was turned out six months later.  Operations ran smoothly with very few labors disputes. But, the factory was damaged seriously by 3 separate tornados.  The first one struck the factory the end of December 1888 and the damage was barely repaired when the factory was again damaged by a windstorm the second week of January 1889.  The third windstorm happened in May 1893.

Glass manufacturing ceased at this plan July 3, 1893 and all of the equipment was shipped to the new factory in Indiana.

Findlay Entertaining on a Holiday Break

This post was originally posted in December 2021 and has been updated to reflect 2022 information.

We had friends in from Texas and we were looking for things to do with five kids 8 and younger on a Monday and a Tuesday in Findlay, Ohio. HUGE dilemma, right?

At first, we were a little concerned because oftentimes many shops and restaurants and even the local children’s museum are closed on those days… but, honesty, it didn’t take me long to curate a fun couple of days for us! The Findlay community has so much to do for families, even around the holidays when it’s colder outside.

Visit Findlay Blogger Ashley shares her favorite spots to show friends who are visiting over the holiday break - See her suggestions here! • VisitFindlay.com

Getting outside is always a good way to spend time with friends

We started with a hike at Riverbend Park. The trails were perfect right before Thanksgiving with all their colors! The kids played on several playgrounds and the grown ups had a chance to walk and talk and take in some of our glorious nature.

Visit Findlay Blogger Ashley shares her favorite spots to show friends who are visiting over the holiday break - See her suggestions here! • VisitFindlay.com

Riverbend Park gives lots of opportunities for fun things to see while on a hike

Afterwards, we headed downtown for lunch at Main Street Deli. Their new barcade was the perfect solution for all our ages and needs! We actually placed our orders at the deli and then went bar-side. The kids all but forgot about how hungry they were while they played all of the games and the adults grabbed a beer. It was so much fun!

The next day, the Cube was offering public ice skating hours so we headed to the north side. We started out all bundled up but within a half hour the kids were stripping off sweaty hats and gloves because they were skating so hard. They skated the full two hours and we all went home with happy hearts.

Visit Findlay Blogger Ashley shares her favorite spots to show friends who are visiting over the holiday break - See her suggestions here! • VisitFindlay.com

The Cube’s open skate is a great way to spend some free time during the holidays!

Finally, the adults got some big-kid time and tried the new pop-up at Brix for a nice dinner out. It was a gorgeous evening with the lights and decorations downtown. Brix’s rotating pop-up had such a festive menu and decor, we certainly left in the mood for the holidays!

We couldn’t let the opportunity of having a babysitter go to waist, so we of course hit a couple more stops including False Chord Brewing and the The Bourbon Affair.

We feel our friends from Texas enjoyed some of the best parts of Findlay, Ohio on their visit! Let us know if we can show you around, too. There’s simply so much to do and see in Hancock County, especially around the holidays.

Growing Up with the Arts at MCPA

I’m the first to admit that I’ve only recently developed an appreciation for the performing arts.  Probably because I am tone deaf and have no rhythm, I never sought out performances other than a holiday show her or there. In fact, my sister would argue that I was the worst spectator in the audience at all her high school concerts and plays. Which is why it may be surprising that now that I’m a parent, my family are regular attendees at local shows.

The Youtheatre performance of Little Mermaid was scheduled the week the pandemic caused performing arts centers to shutter their doors.  However, Youtheatre and Family Series shows are back!

My oldest son, Eli, was just 2 when he attended his first show, a Youtheatre performance of Winnie the Pooh, at First Presbyterian Church in Findlay. One of the best things about Youtheatre performances is that not only are they performed by children, but they are also designed to entertain them.  Even at 2 our son sat and watched the entire show. Sure, there was lap hopping and popcorn bribery, but he watched the entire show.  And he spent the next few days playing with his Pooh toys, exclaiming when we drove by the church, and babbling about “the kids”.  And our toddler wasn’t the only one impressed with the Youtheatre performers. I remember going to Youtheatre’s website after the show to confirm the young performers age – some of them were as young as third grade!

For Visit Findlay's Danielle MCPA has become a staple in her family's life. Read why she has made the arts a priority in her kids' lives. • VisitFindlay.com

Youtheatre shows make a great first experience with the arts

Youtheatre performances are a great introduction to live shows, even more so now that Youtheatre is held at Marathon Center for the Performing Arts (MCPA) on the big stage.  That first Youtheatre show gave all of us the theatre bug – and we haven’t stopped attending shows as a family since then.

For Visit Findlay's Danielle MCPA has become a staple in her family's life. Read why she has made the arts a priority in her kids' lives. • VisitFindlay.com

At family shows sometimes the fun even begins before the show starts!

When MCPA opened their doors in 2015 I knew it would become a favorite spot for our family, especially when the family series was introduced.  The Family Series are shows that are specifically designed for the kids in your life.  Colorful and fun, these shows are about a hour long and meant to be entertaining to both kids and adults.  While at a normal show you may be expected to sit quietly and watch, these shows know their audience so it is okay to get the wiggles out, laugh and sing along, and even dance in the aisles.

For Visit Findlay's Danielle MCPA has become a staple in her family's life. Read why she has made the arts a priority in her kids' lives. • VisitFindlay.com

Family shows and Youtheatre are meant for families – meaning if you need to dance it out, you can (even in the middle of a picture)

I’m not saying anything new when I say the pandemic has stolen so many moments from us. My heart broke a little when my sons and I drove by MCPA during the peak of the pandemic and my youngest, Grant, asked what the building was for. While his brother remembers many of the shows we’ve attended, he had no recollection. But, if you’re wondering the impact of the arts, Eli quickly told him of the magic of MCPA and the shows they’ve seen, even if his little brother might not remember them.

Grant attended his first family series show (that he remembers!) last month and now he’s been bitten by the bug like we were 6 years ago.  After settling in with his popcorn and juice box (even the concessions are family-friendly!) he settled in for the show.  He can be shy, so when he moved from my side to the front to dance with the band it was a big deal.  On our way home we jammed to the music we just listened to live and he spent the rest of the night telling his dad and brother about the concert.

When I was looking at photos from the shows we’ve attended at MCPA I can visually see our kids growing up, each age and stage marked at a performance.  I know we are giving them a foundation for an appreciation of the arts I hope they carry with them their entire lives.  My husband and I make attending shows with our kids a priority because we can see the long-term benefits, as well as short-term.  Short-term, these shows give us entertainment and a topic to talk about together.  Long-term, we know we are exposing them to people, stories, language, and perspective that they may not discover otherwise.

For Visit Findlay's Danielle MCPA has become a staple in her family's life. Read why she has made the arts a priority in her kids' lives. • VisitFindlay.com

MCPA shows are great for all ages!

I’m not sure if they will be on stage like the Youtheatre kids that started our family’s Findlay Arts journey, but I know they will at least be in the audience cheering them on.  You can see the upcoming Family Series shows at MCPA here, and learn more about Youtheatre here.  View all of MCPA’s upcoming shows (whether you take the kids or not!) here.
